JOB DESCRIPTION

Medical Assistant

Scope of Duties:

  • Work collaboratively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams (Registration Radiology Physician Practice Management Physical Therapy)
  • Escorting patients to exam rooms and preparing them for examinations reviewing patient statuses and assisting in obtaining patient data.
  • Obtain PCR nasal swabs for presurgical patients
  • Support the PreSurgical Screening program by assisting nurses and obtaining vital signs lab specimens (venipuncture) and EKGs.
  • Preparing specimens for the lab and ensuring handoff to courier
  • Foster efficient patient throughput deliver excellent customer service and establish and maintain an organized professional environment.
  • Assist the physician in treatments and procedures and ensure physician orders are completed in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in cast removal suture and staple removal and application of off the shelf braces.
  • Maintain sensitivity and awareness of cultural and religious diversity when addressing patients visitors coworkers and other customers.

Demonstrates Clinical Proficiency Reports changes in patients condition. Reports changes in patient condition to the RN or MD. Demonstrates Competency & Safety of Patient Care Completes duties requesting assistance as needed. Carries out responsibilities in a timely fashion requesting assistance as needed. Endeavors to Improve Organizational Performance Maintains a costeffective approach to patient care. Uses type and quantity of materials to meet patient care requirements at the least cost. Endeavors to Improve Organizational Performance Maximizes efficiency and productivity. Identifies and recommends ways to improve efficiency and/or outcomes in work standards. Performs activities that maintain efficient unit operations as assigned (such as preparing patients for transport keeping egress clear).Endeavors to Improve Organizational Performance Provides feedback to others to ensure performance improvement. Provides feedback to personnel as necessary to acknowledge and/or improve quality (i. e. timeliness efficiency appropriateness patient satisfaction).Endeavors to Improve Organizational Performance Reports excessive use of costly materials. Recognizes and reports use of costly or excessive quantity of materials. Endeavors to Improve Organizational Performance Shares pertinent professional information and knowledge with others. Exchanges appropriate and professional information with coworkers. Ensures Continuum of Care Communicates when deadlines cannot be met. Communicates to appropriate person when deadlines cannot be met and identifies barriers to task completion. Ensures Continuum of Care Initiates emergency interventions appropriately. Initiates emergency interventions (heartsaver) as appropriate according to unitbased standard of care. Ensures Continuum of Care Provides status report of patient. Gives verbal handoffs and patient reports to RN and other colleagues at breaks change of shifts and before leaving the unit. Exercises Leadership Notifies appropriate personnel of urgent/emergent situations. Notifies appropriate personnel of emergent/urgent situations; initiates emergency interventions (Heartsaver) as appropriate. Maintains Documentation & Manages Information Accurately records data. Accurately records data (i. e. vital signs heights and weight).Maintains Documentation & Manages Information Follows guidelines for documentation. Documents per established HSS/office guidelines. Participates in Education Completes mandatory eLearning. Completes mandatory annual elearning. Participates in Education Maintains clinical competency. Maintains clinical competencies by attending Hospital wide inservices as approved and assigned by Patient Care Director. Promotes Environment of Care/Infection Control Promotes & ensures patient safety. Follows and implements established policies and procedures to ensure patient safety. Promotes Environment of Care/Infection Control Promotes principles of Infection Control and Standard Precautions. Promotes utilization of principles of Infection Control and Standard precautions in the performance of patient care activities. Promotes Environment of Safety/Infection Control Reports malfunctioning equipment appropriately. Follows procedures for malfunctioning equipment as outlined by the Department of Biomedical Engineering. Promotes Environment of Safety/Infection Control Reports safety and security issues immediately. Immediately reports safety and security problems to the appropriate persons. Upholds Patient Rights/Organizational Ethics Offers support to patients and families. Offers emotional physical or spiritual support for patients and family members. Upholds Patient Rights/Organizational Ethics Privacy and dignity. Takes steps to maintain the patients physical and personal privacy. Upholds Standards/Expectations of HSS Staff Checks unit refrigerators. Checks unit refrigerators and records temperatures on refrigerator daily logs and/or AED as applicable. Upholds Standards/Expectations of HSS Staff Monitors other patients on unit during emergencies. Monitors other patients on unit during emergency situation and communicates issues to appropriate nurse. Upholds Standards/Expectations of HSS Staff Time management. Completes assignments and meets deadlines. Upholds Standards/Expectations of HSS Staff Uses and maintains equipment as intended. Uses and maintains HSS equipment furnishings and facilities as intended. Unit Specific: (Ambulatory Care) Prepares site for invasive joint injections/aspirations. Prepares patient for invasive joint injections/aspirations utilizing sterile techniques. Unit Specific: (Ambulatory Care) Stocks exam rooms weekly and as needed. Stocks exam rooms weekly and as needed. Unit Specific: Ensures patient care areas are clean and presentable. Ensures that patient care areas are clean neat and ready for patient use. Unit Specific: Maintains the patients medical records according to requirements. Maintains the patients medical records according to requirements. Unit Specific: Obtains and reports vital signs. Obtains and reports vital signs to the RN or physician as applicable. Unit Specific: Participates in programs & huddles. Participates in programs and huddles as designated. Demonstrates Clinical Proficiency Assists with wound care. Assists with changing of postop dressings removal of sutures and carries out appropriate wound care under direct supervision of clinical privileged license personnel as applicable. Upholds Standards/Expectations of HSS Staff Works collaboratively with others. Works cooperatively within own unit/department and with other units/departments. Acts as team player as indicated by feedback from the care delivery team/ office clinic team as applicable. EDUCATION REQUIRED

High School Diploma or equivalent (G. E. D.) may include specialized or vocational courses. Additional outpatient didactic and clinical training such as obtained through completion of a corpsmen or patient care associate program or equivalent experience. EDUCATION PREFERRED
