Job Description

JOB GOAL:The School Counselor will respond to students academic personal socialemotional and mental health needs and assist them as they develop postsecondary plans. The School Counselor will provide direct service through individual meetings and classroom seminars. The school counselor will collaborate with colleagues across disciplines including administration teachers and student support service providers. This is a Unit A position; compensation by the collectively bargained Knowledge: Understanding of adolescent development and knowledge of best practices for socialemotional learningDemonstrated commitment to ensuring academic success for all studentsKnowledgeable in various ways to support students in their postsecondary planning and vision throughout high schoolThorough understanding of a broad range of counseling techniques needed to support diverse student needsUnderstanding of diversity equity inclusion and social justice as they relate to student staff and community engagementPreferred Experience: Experience with Google Suite (Drive Docs Sheets Slides Classroom etc.) Naviance and Aspen preferred but will train the right candidateSkills:Demonstrated aptitude for work to be performedCandidates should have a passion for working with students families and colleaguesCandidates must be flexible and collaborativeCandidates must be able to multitask in a fastpaced supportive environment that nurtures student growthCandidates must be organized and able to meet ongoing timesensitive deadlines for work productionESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB (not limited to)The list of duties is not an exhaustive list of the duties performed for this position. Additional duties are performed by the individuals currently holding this position and additional duties may be assigned. Provide postsecondary planning including support with the college application process and assisting students with alternative postgraduation goals. Write recommendation letters including but not limited to those needed for college private schools and of MyCAP and ability to assist in the implementationAdminister developmental school counseling seminars based on the ASCA School Counseling Model for each grade level including the use of Naviance as a resource Ability to enhance and present the school counseling curriculum to students and parents/guardians including but not limited to classroom setting and evening eventsMaintain active participation in IEP meetings and attend annual 504 meetingsEnsure the use of effective communication to build connections with students and parents/guardians while addressing student needs and referring them to the appropriate school and community resources as needed Work with district and school leadership to combat systemic barriers that limit student family and staff members equitable access to opportunityGuide each student to create a personalized course schedule based on their educational vocational and personal goals while using Aspen to create and manage student schedules Participate in the organization and administration of required student testing (ex: PSAT)Monitor atrisk students and those in danger of not promoting/graduating while collaborating with the MHS team to develop appropriate interventions Engage in creative problemsolving while working collaboratively with teachers administrators and other staff
