Fort Worth Country Day is seeking an enthusiastic professional who preferably has experience in both independent school and upper school education. Reporting to the Head of Upper School this highly qualified experienced and dynamic teacher will serve as an Upper School English teacher beginning with theschool year.

About the English Department:

The mission of the FWCD K12 English/Language Arts Department is to foster critical reading critical thinking and critical writing skills so that the FWCD student will mature into a discerning reader and thinker and articulate and persuasive writer. Our curriculum focuses on developing the intellectual skills necessary for students to become engaged and empathetic critical readers and precise and effective writers. Our skillsbased curriculum utilizes both fiction and nonfiction texts that are age appropriate and reflect a wide range of voices. These texts become the foundation for discussion and writing which allows students to delve into how authors make meaning and how these works reflect the diversity and complexity of the human experience. As students engage with the ideas in these texts they plan write revise and eventually incorporate the words and ideas of others to become increasingly selfactualized thinkers with developing voices who better understand their connection to the world.

The Upper School English department provides a program that is designed with all students taking AP English Language and Composition as their culminating course with the hope of all seniors earning a composition credit going into college. Over half of our juniors take AP English Literature and Composition in eleventh grade and all students take English 10 and English 9 with no tracking at those levels. The Department works to maintain the highest standards of professionalism and excellence.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Teaching a total of five sections of courses which could include English 9 English 10 English 11 AP English Literature and Composition or AP English Language and Composition; teaching assignments will depend on the departments needs but most faculty teach two different courses.
  • Serving as an advisor/mentor to about twelve upper school students and taking on extracurricular duties such as coaching sponsoring clubs or chaperoning trips
  • Collaborating with fellow grade level teachers and communicating effectively with teachers above and below your grade level
  • Communicating classroom expectations and grading student work punctually fairly and consistently in accordance with departmental standards expectations and rubrics
  • Documenting and communicating students progress
  • Offering students the opportunity for extra help and conferencing with students over their writing
  • Demonstrating a wide range of presentation techniques in order to address different learning styles and abilities
  • Understanding and adhering to our departments scope and sequence
  • Using technology as an instructional tool
  • Demonstrating excellent classroom management and organizational skills

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have a passion for the subject matter and for teaching
  • Be a team player and work well with others in the division and in the K12 ELA department
  • Have excellent communication skills

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of an undergraduate degree in English preferably a Masters degree
  • At least 35 years of upper school or high school classroom teaching experience
