Evening Operations & Custodial Manager

Purpose Statement

The Evening Operations & Custodial Manager supports the Director of Operations and the Operations Coordinator in overseeing the daily functions of the Custodial Department. This role is primarily responsible for supervising and managing a designated group of custodial staff within an assigned zone ensuring effective operations and maintaining high standards of cleanliness and safety.

Job Title: Evening Operations & Custodial Manager

Salary Range: Grade 12

Hours: 1:00 P.M. 10:00 P.M Monday Friday with occasional weekend hours

Employment Term: Employment Agreement / 12 months

Reports To: Operations Coordinator

Wage/Hour Status: Exempt

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five (5) years of custodial experience with two years in an educational environment preferred.
  • Experience in supervision of custodial/maintenance staff preferred.
  • Valid Iowa Drivers License
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to resolve conflicts and motivate staff.
  • Proficient in using scheduling and maintenance software.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing conditions and priorities.



Essential Functions

Supervision & Management: Responsible for managerial functions of evaluations scheduling hiring staffing and establishing disciplinary actions for custodial staff. Effectively communicate expectations to minimize personnel issues between staff and maximize job performance.

Event Coordination & Facility Scheduling: Utilize scheduling software to organize custodial support for internal and external events ensuring proper staffing for evening and weekend activities. Collaborate with the Family & Community Engagement department for purposes of assigning staff for rental clients and assessing damages to buildings resulting from community use.

Team Leadership: Facilitate clear communication of job expectations addressing personnel issues and fostering a positive work environment to enhance staff performance.

Process Improvement: Identify opportunities for greater efficiency and innovation within custodial operations to adapt to changing needs. Establish and monitor training for custodial staff job responsibilities including districtwide standards for cleaning protocol.

Scheduling: Develop effective schedules for custodial staff to ensure optimal coverage and efficiency in maintaining district facilities.

OnCall Support: Be on call for afterhours issues including availability for alarm response opening buildings and providing coverage as needed etc.

Staff Coordination: Collaborate with daytime custodial managers to make staffing adjustments based on changing needs or event requirements. Ensure adequate custodial coverage across secondary schools adjusting staffing as needed.

Equipment Management: Assist in the procurement and maintenance of custodial equipment keeping inventory records and managing preventive maintenance schedules.

Work Orders & Equipment: Manage building maintenance requests and coordinate the transfer of supplies and equipment. Maintain preventative maintenance records on equipment.

Other Functions

  • Adhere to state/federal guidelines including environmentally preferable cleaning and maintenance policy OSHA compliance and cleaning plans.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders (e.g. other administrators district staff public agencies community members etc.) to implement and/or maintain services and programs.
  • Participate in staff development training programs faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
  • Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision.
  • Demonstrates integrity and maintains confidentiality of privileged and sensitive information when received and distributed to appropriate designees as directed by the Superintendent or designee.
  • Works well with others maintaining positive and effective communication with district personnel and works well with others on jobs that require more than one person.
  • Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies.
  • Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to District operations.
  • Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
  • Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing appropriate personnel for resolution.
  • Maintain an organized work environment.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Working Environment

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: lifting carrying pushing pulling climbing reaching driving standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress.
