Job Description

Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Resources and Operations with work lead direction from the Department Chair of Communicative Disorders and Sciences Department. The Department of Communicative Disorders and Sciences values handson clinical instruction and supervision for student clinicians interprofessional training evidencebased practice clinical innovation community engagement and culturally responsive practice. The Department enrolls about 250 students in its B.A. and M.A. programs houses the oncampus Kay Armstead Center for Communicative Disorders (KACCD) and multiple faculty labs. Faculty focus areas include child language disorders autism intellectual disability aphasia augmentative and alternative communication voice and fluency disorders motor speech disorders and dysphagia.

They will serve as CDS primary resource in providing strategic vision and leadership to align clinical education practice and supervision with the departments mission vision and strategic plan. The Director of Clinical Education will support initiatives and projects related to improving clinical education experiences and professional learning communities. The Director will work collaboratively with key leaders from the community to identify practice and professional development priorities. The Director will collaborate with faculty and program coordinators to establish new partnerships and work to strengthen existing ones to support the quantity quality and variety of clinical experiences needed such that SJSU remains a high priority for partnerships. The Director will collaborate with relevant SJSU Departments faculty members and clinical educators to support any needed course design or redesign to support practice alignment with the Colleges strategic plan and each Programs learning objectives while ensuring accreditation licensure and credential standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and implement new clinical programs and services that align with the latest evidencebased practices in speechlanguage pathology ensuring the program is innovative and responsive to client needs.
  • Develop and monitor policies for managing client care adherence to ethical standards and that all services are consistent with best practices in speechlanguage pathology.
  • Evaluate and integrate new technological tools to enhance both the delivery of clinical services and the educational experience of students. This may include telepractice data collection systems or electronic health records (EHR).
  • Build relationships with local healthcare organizations schools and community groups to provide clinical services and educational opportunities for students. This could involve outreach initiatives and partnerships to expand the clinics impact.
  • Develop and oversee quality assurance programs to ensure services are effective efficient and meet professional standards. Regularly assess clinic outcomes and implement improvements as needed.
  • Provide supervision and mentorship to clinical educators including faculty and practicum supervisors ensuring that they understand and adhere to educational and clinical goals.
  • Collaborate with clinical sites to develop practicum placement opportunities. Ensure students are placed in appropriate clinical settings balancing a variety of clinical experiences that meet both educational and regulatory standards.
  • Develop implement and assess clinical education curricula to ensure it aligns with accreditation standards and provides students with comprehensive handson experience in a variety of clinical settings.
  • Establish criteria for the evaluation of students clinical competencies and ensure consistent fair and comprehensive assessments. Monitor student progress and provide additional support as needed.
  • Lead ongoing training sessions for clinical educators focusing on best practices in clinical supervision ethical standards and how to effectively teach clinical skills.
  • Oversee the clinics financial planning including creating and managing the annual budget ensuring resources are allocated appropriately for clinic operations and making adjustments as necessary.
  • Manage daily clinic operations including scheduling client appointments ensuring efficient patient flow and overseeing support staff duties. Ensure that all clinic activities comply with university and accreditation standards.
  • Ensure that necessary materials equipment and technology are available and maintained to support both student learning and clinical services. This may include evaluating and ordering supplies managing inventory and upgrading equipment as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with university policies state regulations and accreditation requirements (e.g. ASHA). Maintain accurate records and prepare regular reports on clinic financials services and activities for the administration.
  • Promote and support ongoing professional development for both clinical educators and students. This includes organizing workshops seminars and conferences on the latest advancements in speechlanguage pathology. Support as ASHA CE Provider administrator.
  • Foster a culture of research and evidencebased practice within the program. Encourage faculty clinicians and students to engage in research activities that contribute to advancing the field of speechlanguage pathology.
  • Stay informed on accreditation standards certification requirements and licensure processes ensuring that the clinical education program meets all the professional and regulatory standards for CCTC and ASHA.

  • Skill in leading the daytoday operations of a clinical education environment.
  • Knowledge of and ability to interpret and convey CSU SJSU ASHA and CCTC policies and procedures to provide support to KACCD.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and appropriately handle sensitive information and communication with student faculty clients parents/guardians employees and external agencies.
  • Maintain updated FERPA information and procedures and provide that information to KACCD.
  • Ability to create implement and lead programs that are responsive to a diverse and multicultural student population.
  • Working knowledge of software applications such as word processing spreadsheets database management and the internet. Ability to use PeopleSoft and working knowledge of student success related applications.
  • Demonstrated experience complying with admission policies and procedures related to federal state and campus rules and regulations.

Required Qualifications

  • A bachelors degree and/or equivalent training.
  • Six years of administrative work experience involving study analysis and/or evaluation leading to the development or improvement of administrative policies procedures practices or programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters degree or equivalent in speechlanguage pathology or audiology from an educational institution approved by the California SpeechLanguage Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board.
  • Equivalent to 10 years of clinical speech pathology work or equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.
  • License and Certifications: Possess and maintain a Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) in Speech Pathology awarded by the American SpeechLanguageHearing Association and a valid license from the California SpeechLanguage Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board.
  • Extensive experience with supervision of graduate student clinicians.
  • Experience with managing speech and hearing clinics.
  • Significant leadership in clinical education and supervision of undergraduate and graduate student clinicians.
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in crosscultural study training teaching and other comparable experience.
  • Experience working with staff faculty students and clients/families with culturallylinguistically diverse backgrounds and creating an inclusive equitable and welcoming environment.
  • Experience in managing and developing speech and hearing clinics caseload management budget and fundraising.
  • Training in best practices for clinical education supervision and telepractice in speechlanguage pathology.
  • Knowledge of communication disorders across the lifespan and clinical management across settings with ability to objectively evaluate clinical performance of student clinicians.

Classification: Administrative Analyst/Specialist Exempt III
Anticipated Hiring Range: $10143/month $10657/month
CSU Salary Range: $6970/month $13544/month
