Job Description

Director of Humanities: K12

Social Studies and Unified Arts

Fitchburg Public Schools (FPS) seeks a visionary and equitydriven Director of Humanities to lead curriculum instruction and professional development across History/Social Studies and Unified Arts (including music art physical education health theater and technology). The ideal candidate brings deep content knowledge a commitment to culturally responsive and antiracist practices and the leadership skills to align and advance humanities education across K12 classrooms.

Qualifications:

  • Masters Degree from an accredited college or university;
  • Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education license in one or more of these areas:
    • History/Social Studies is required
    • Unified Arts licensure preferred; exceptions may be considered for candidates with strong experience in at least one Unified Arts discipline;
  • Minimum 5 years of successful teaching experience in relevant content areas;
  • Demonstrated experience in curriculum development instructional leadership and professional development;
  • Proven ability to lead with an equityfocused antiracist lens;
  • Effective communication organizational and leadership skills;
  • Proficiency in data analysis and technology tools to support instructional leadership.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supervising or mentoring educators;
  • Background in projectbased or artsintegrated learning models;
  • Experience in urban education settings or with diverse student populations;
  • Bilingual or multilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide K12 instructional leadership in History/Social Studies and Unified Arts;
  • Lead development implementation and continuous improvement of curriculum aligned with DESE standards;
  • Oversee crossdisciplinary initiatives that integrate the humanities with culturally sustaining pedagogy;
  • Facilitate professional learning aligned with best practices in instruction and equity;
  • Monitor program effectiveness through data analysis and collaborative evaluation processes;
  • Support educators through coaching feedback and collaboration;
  • Coordinate the selection and distribution of materials and instructional resources;
  • Contribute to annual budget planning and resource management;
  • Collaborate with district leadership and contribute to FPSs Teaching and Learning vision;
  • Serve as a contributing evaluator for nonPTS staff as needed;
  • Champion inclusive equitable and accessible learning environments.

Terms of Employment/Salary/Work Year:

As negotiated by the Fitchburg School Committee and the Fitchburg Administrators Association (FAA).The work year is 215 days.
