PRIMARY PURPOSE:
To provide recent immigrant English learners with appropriate EL instruction learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual linguistic emotional physical and social growth; enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Bachelors Degree required
Texas Teaching Certificate with required endorsements for subject/level assigned or other permits as approved by state required
Bilingual or ESL Certificate required
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Communicate effectively (verbal and written) in both English and Spanish; utilize effective interpersonal skills; demonstrate knowledge of subjects assigned; exhibit general knowledge of curriculum and instruction; basic computer skills; understanding of Second Language Acquisition; multicultural awareness
Experience:
At least one (1) year of student teaching or approved internship

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Keep informed about current legislation educational developments literature and research in the field of education/second language acquisition/assigned subject by participating in state and national professional organizations; attend appropriate conferences and staff development sessions; maintain professional growth in the core knowledge area of competency.
2. Develop differentiated instructional plans for the assigned curriculum and provide written evidence of program implementation.
3. Work cooperatively with all teachers including special education teachers and/or LPAC/504/RtI committee to modify curricula as needed for students with linguistic and/or special needs according to guidelines established by Individual Educational Plans or LPAC/504/RtI accommodation plans.
4. Present the knowledge and skills of the subject matter and the English Language Proficiency Standards according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency Board policies and administrative regulations.
5. Plan prepare and execute lessons instructional strategies activities materials and equipment that reflect accommodations for individual cognitive and linguistic needs of students.
6. Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning and implementing instructional goals objectives and methods to address the needs of special populations especially English learners.
7. Plan supervise and evaluate purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and/or volunteer(s).
8. Utilize technology in planning organizing and implementing the teaching/learning process and other classroom managerial functions.
9. Assist students in analyzing and understanding the learning process so that they may become lifelong learners.
10. Monitor and assess student achievement through informal and formal testing procedures.
11. Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned and cooperate with the sponsorship for activities approved by the school.
12. Demonstrate professional ethical and responsible behavior and be a positive role model for students.
13. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate to the physical social linguistic and emotional development of students; take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
14. Manage student behavior in the classroom adhering to the District Discipline Management Plan in accordance with Board policies administrative regulations and Individual Education Plans.
15. Assist in the selection of textbooks supplies equipment instructional materials and technology resources.
16. Establish open lines of communication and maintain a professional relationship with students parents colleagues community members and supervisors.
17. Demonstrate interest and initiative in personal and professional improvement; participate in the campus and district staff development program.
18. Keep informed of and comply with federal state district and campus regulations and policies for classroom teachers; compile maintain and file all reports records and other documents as required.
19. Follow McAllen ISD customer service standards.
20. Perform other duties assigned by immediate supervisor (primary evaluator).
