Job Description

Abington Friends School is an ambitious Quaker school community with a powerful academic program for children age 3 through grade 12. Our students seek intellectual adventure build strong analytical and creative thinking skills and form a sturdy sense of self. More information is available at Friends Upper School seeks a passionate and experienced Music Director for its Upper School Fall Musical. This parttime stipend position runs from September 8 through midNovember and requires a 12 hours of rehearsal per week commitment. The ideal candidate will be a competent piano player and have a strong background in both music education and performance along with a commitment to fostering a love for music and theater in students. The candidate will work closely with the director and other instructors to create an inclusive and nurturing learning environment that benefits the students theatrical and emotional experience.

Details of the Position:

  • Student auditions will be held in early September
  • Weekly rehearsals are held M/T/W/Th from 3:155:30 and Sunday from 14:30
  • Tech week begins Saturday November 8
  • Performances are ThursdaySaturday November 1315

Responsibilities:

  • All musical instruction for the Upper School musical for both vocal and instrumental performers
  • Leading the pit orchestra (if applicable) in rehearsals and during performances
  • Attending rehearsals and performances
  • Working closely with student musicians at varying levels in a manner that fosters a positive and supportive learning environment
  • Collaborating with the instructional team in ways that add to the musical production
  • Provide constructive feedback and assessments to students to aid in their musical development
  • Communicate effectively with the Director and Choreographer.

Qualifications:

  • Evidence of successful vocal music direction at the K12 level
  • Proficiency in piano performance
  • Knowledge of and ability to rehearse pit orchestra instrumentalists is a plus but not required
  • Ability to connect with students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles
  • Commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive learning environment grounded in Quaker values
  • Flexibility creativity and a passion for youth theater
