The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) is Canadas leading addiction and mental health teaching hospital. As CAMHs Legal Counsel (Forensic) you will provide legal support to CAMH clinicians and clinical leadership and in doing so support CAMHs role as a leader in healthcare.

LEGAL COUNSEL FORENSIC (Criminal Law)

Reporting to the Director Legal Services (Clinical) you will be responsible for providing legal advice and litigation services to clinical teams and administrators primarily in CAMHs Forensic Service. You will represent CAMH and its clinicians in hearings before health law tribunals with a focus on hearings before the Ontario Review Board and resulting appeals to the Ontario Court of Appeal. This includes responsibility for hearingrelated consultations and preparation and the provision of legal support to clinical and medical leadership. In addition you will liaise with external partners including local police court and tribunal staff and corrections personnel. As a member of CAMH Legal Services you will also be involved in the development of CAMH internal policy and the delivery of legal education and training to clinical teams. You will be called upon by CAMHs Chief Legal Officer and the Director Legal Services (Clinical) on legal matters and represent CAMHs interests with relevant community partners and stakeholders.

As a member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario you have a minimum of 2 years of legal work experience with a focus on litigation. Familiarity with the forensic legal system and laws related to the criminal justice system public hospitals and mental health facilities is preferred. Litigation experience before administrative tribunals (Ontario Review Board Consent and Capacity Board health regulatory Colleges and/or the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal) is considered an asset.

Your communication skills must be excellent (oral and written) and you must have strong interpersonal negotiation and presentation skills. Excellent judgment tact and diplomacy are essential to this role.
