Job Description

As a key member of our multidisciplinary team the Genetic Counsellor will provide comprehensive genetic services to a diverse multicultural population. The successful candidate will be responsible for genetic assessments counselling and patient support including diagnostic evaluations documentation and followup care. This role will primarily support patients in areas such as cancer genetics prenatal/preconception genetics and general genetics collaborating with a medical geneticist on pediatric and adult cases.

In this role you will work with patients and their families to help them understand the implications of genetic disorders in the context of their personal familial and cultural backgrounds. Responsibilities include gathering and analyzing family history and inheritance patterns calculating recurrence risks and providing information about genetic testing and related procedures. Additionally the Genetic Counsellor will serve on committees as needed and act as a resource for genetic information for healthcare professionals patients and the general public.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct genetic assessments and provide counselling and support to patients.
  • Participate in diagnostic evaluations and ensure thorough documentation and followup care.
  • Collaborate with a medical geneticist in the management of pediatric and adult patients.
  • Educate families on the significance of genetic disorders inheritance patterns and testing options.
  • Serve as a resource to healthcare professionals and the public on genetic disorders.
  • Participate in relevant committees and contribute to the improvement of genetics services.

What must you have

  • Board certification or eligibility with the Canadian Association of Genetic Counsellors (CAGC) and/or the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC).

  • Ability to interpret and implement hospital and departmental policies programs and procedures as required.
  • Excellent written oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proven attendance record.
  • Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all.
  • Ability to perform the essential duties of the job.
  • Effectively uses empathy in interactions with others and demonstrates behaviours consistent with Mackenzie Healths Commitment to Caring.

Preferably your profile also includes:

  • One year recent genetic counseling experience (prenatal and general genetics) preferred.
