Why Your Role Matters

The Research Experience Librarian supports the development and delivery of Library activities to Higher Degree Research (HDR) candidates and researchers at all levels including workshops and strategic advice. These include activities in support of scholarly communications open research and engagement with the objective to increase visibility and impact of UNSWs scholarship and knowledge assets and individual researchers.

The role provides expert advice to inform the design and delivery of the Librarys scholarly communications services for researchers and HDR candidates. Scholarly communications services are designed to assist researchers to make informed choices and best leverage open access traditional publishing and technological opportunities when publishing their research outputs for maximum impact. The role also provides guidance on infrastructure systems and workflows that enhance and support scholarly communication at UNSW.

The role reports to the Manager Scholarly Communication and Repositories and has no direct reports. The role is a parental leave cover for 12 months starting date asap (end date June 2026).

Main responsibilities Summary

  • Contribute to skills development and resources to provide information advice and solutions to researchers and HDR candidates addressing the complex issues prevalent in scholarly communication and publishing environments.

  • Develop and deliver activities in coordination with subject matter experts and other library staff across the Library matrix to support publishing research evaluation and copyright activities applied to evolving scholarly communications practices.

  • Contribute to the development review and improvement of workshop content and the delivery of online content and other resources.

  • Apply a thorough knowledge of University government and industry policies to Library services.

  • Provide advice on tools metadata interoperability and workflows to streamline the deposit process for researchers and to increase discovery of UNSW open access research outputs in accordance with the FAIR principles (Findable Accessible Interoperable Reusable).

  • Contribute to the delivery of Scholarly Communications Support within the Librarys Service Management Framework and Service Catalogue including providing strategic advice for these areas at a Library level.

Who You Are

We are looking for someone who is aligned with UNSWs values aims and commitment and comes with:

  • A relevant tertiary qualification with subsequent relevant experience or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education training and/or experience.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the research process and practices and the scholarly communications environment including publisher policies and agreements copyright open access metrics and impact and the use of authoring communication tools in which university researchers and HDR candidates operate.

  • Thorough knowledge of the application of digital repositories research infrastructure interoperability bibliometrics and other trends applied to facilitating open research/open science and scholarly communication.

  • Excellent presentation skills and demonstrated ability to deliver informative and influential presentations workshops and resources to convey and advocate complex and innovative solutions.

  • Advanced communication interpersonal and negotiation skills with ability to influence and sustain relationships with stakeholders at all levels both internal and external.

  • Excellent time management skills with a demonstrated ability to respond to changing priorities manage multiple tasks and meet competing deadlines by using judgement and initiative.

Working hours are Monday to Friday business hours.
