Job Description

Job Description:

The primary purpose of the position is to provide quality care to patients in a complex clinical environment. SRMOs will work in Emergency Medicine with the possibility of spending a term in Intensive Care.

This year has been designed to fulfil the requirements for application to the Australasian College for Emergency Medicine (ACEM) and to enable development of your clinical skills towards pursuing a career in Emergency Medicine however we also support applicants who are working towards an Emergency Medicine Certificate/Diploma. There is a comprehensive education program provided with the opportunity for SRMOs to become involved by teaching and/or coordinating the Emergency Department JMO Teaching program. SRMOs who are ACEM members are invited to attend Emergency Registrar teaching sessions which include examination preparation for the ACEM Primary Exam. We run an EPIC Course which is intended to equip our SRMOs with all the skills necessary to becoming an Emergency Registrar and includes sessions in our Simulation Centre ultrasound training procedural skills training and interpretation of investigations.

All services with the exception of Paediatrics and Obstetrics are provided at St. Vincents Hospital. In the event that paediatric / obstetric patients selfpresent to St. Vincents Emergency they are stabilised and transferred by ambulance if required to the nearest Hospital able to provide those services.

Key Accountabilities

  • Under appropriate supervision provide day to day care assess and manage the patients conditions under your care in such a manner as to ensure the provision of high quality clinical services to hospital patients.
  • Communicate patientrelevant information in a timely and clear manner to patients under their families/carers and all staff involved in the patients care to facilitate shared decisionmaking and timely information transfer.
  • Ensure accurate documentation in relation to patient care whilst maintaining confidentiality and privacy to ensure timely and efficient communication and that patient records are effective for current and future use. This includes preparing treatment plans correspondence with other treating practitioners entry into medical records referrals discharge summaries reports certificates and any other documentation in relation to patient care and management.
  • Teach and supervise other more junior clinical staff to ensure an optimal learning environment promote growth and development of others and to develop skills in teaching.
  • Contribute to research projects to contribute to scholarly knowledge that leads to better patient outcomes.
  • Participate in the Departments quality assurance activities to ensure that appropriate standards are maintained gaps in safety and quality standards are identified and to contribute to the continual improvement of the department and the service provided by the hospital.
  • Actively monitor and manage own mental and physical wellbeing reporting concerns and seeking assistance when needed.
  • Create a personal training or development plan participate in available educational experiences and actively seek to learn and obtain feedback in order to develop and understand your own skills knowledge and capability and therefore to exercise judgement and know when to seek assistance.
  • Time management and prioritisation of patients and liaising with local medical officers and other community base care modalities to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Participating in difficult and critical conversations with patients families clients and carers especially from diverse background with beliefs and customs that may be contrary to evidence based medical practice.

Other Requirements

  • Ensure compliance across all relevant standards of accreditation and legislative requirements within areas of responsibility or as delegated by the CEO St Vincents Health Network Sydney.
  • Participate in afterhours rosters including nights and weekends and/or participate in a 24/7 roster and may be rostered to day evening or night shifts across a seven day roster.
  • Move between services and geographical locations to deliver patient care as needed
  • Participate in ward rounds and clinical handover to transfer information accountability and responsibility for a patient or group of patients following the ISBAR protocol National Australian Standards.
  • Complete mandatory training as required by the network and NSW Health.
  • Attend all applicable organisationwide hospital department and role orientation sessions.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant legislation standards and industrial instruments.
  • Operate within the delegated responsibilities and authorities as set by St Vincents Health Australia
  • All staff are expected to take reasonable care that their acts and omissions do not adversely affect the health and safety of others that they comply with any reasonable instructions that is given to them and with any policies/procedures relating to health or safety in the workplace as well as notifying any hazards/risks or incidents to their managers.
  • For accredited training roles comply with the relevant specialist medical colleges training and examination requirements.
  • Act as role model and promote a culture and supporting practices that reflect the organisational values through demonstrated behaviours and interactions with patients/clients/employees.
  • Ensure facilities operate at all times in compliance with the Catholic Health Australia Code of Ethical Standards for Catholic Health and Aged Care Services in Australia and relevant legislation.
  • Current immunity status that complies with the NSW Health Policy Directive Occupational Assessment Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases (PD2022030) as amended is in force or introduced from time to time.

Selection Criteria

MBBS or equivalent currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia

Completion of at least two postgraduate years with experience in emergency medicine in an Australian Emergency Department or equivalent.

Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills.

Demonstrated excellent communication skills (verbal and written) and computer skills. Demonstrated interest in teaching and research.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.

A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to participate in afterhours overtime and oncall rosters metropolitan and rural rotations.
