The person in this position provides technical guidance and will work handson with a team of Engineers and Scientists tasked with solving some of BNSFs most challenging problems. The work product of this position is critical for minimizing safety risks reducing derailment potential lowering lifecycle costs of infrastructure and rolling stock systems and testing and reviewing the quality of materials used on the railroad.
Key Responsibilities may include:
- Conducting failure analyses on components and materials.
- Conducting new product and material evaluations.
- Working with BNSF legal counsel on investigations of personal injuries and derailments.
- Becoming proficient in programming operation calibration and repair of laboratory instruments including but not limited to data acquisition and recording systems cyclic testing machines etc.
- Safely and effectively operating and maintaining shop tools (band saw lathe mill etc.)
- Assisting with development and application of new technologies to improve BNSF safety velocity and efficiency.
- Conducting field operation of BNSF research and test cars including data acquisition system operation test equipment installation and maintenance running repairs and routine maintenance.
- Becoming proficient in derailment investigation techniques and procedures. Performing derailment investigation training and assisting BNSF field operations employees in select investigations.
- Compile consolidate and communicate technical findings in a clear and concise manner through written and verbal briefings to internal and external stakeholders.
- Subject to rotating oncall periods for 24hr emergency onsite derailment response.

Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in mechanical electrical aerospace or industrial engineering
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
- Basic skills in statics data processing and data analysis
- Experience with computer aided design (CAD) software
- Communication skills to clearly quantify and summarize scientific results for nontechnical consumers.
- Organizational and time management skills to handle multiple concurrent projects.
- Must be able to safely work in a shop and laboratory environment.
- Working knowledge of physics (electricity electronics statics dynamics fluid dynamics metallurgical fundamentals)
- Excellent leadership skills as described in the BNSF Leadership Model
- Must have a firm commitment to BNSF Safety Culture willingness to work in a diverse and challenging environment and have a commitment to laboratory safety compliance
- Must be selfdirected and motivated able to work individually and on a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Masters degree mechanical or electrical engineering
- Licensed professional engineer
- Certification in ultrasonic testing or other nondestructive testing methods
- Two or more years experience with Solidworks
- Strong working knowledge of railroad safety and operations.
- Two or more years experience in a laboratory or test lab
- Experience in root cause failure analysis and/or forensic techniques
- Experience safely operating shop tools (saw lathe mill welder 3D printer)
- Experience in mechanical and/or electrical fabrication
- Experience with sensors and their applications (strain gauges accelerometers pressure sensors etc)
- Working knowledge of electrical power systems (generators motors and their controls)
- Working knowledge of vehicle dynamics (rail automotive marine or aerospace)
- Computer programming experience (Matlab Python C/C/C# Visual Basic)
- Working knowledge of microcontrollers PLCs or other computer controls
- Understanding of FRA and AAR regulations and standards.
