Equipment Operator I

Salary:
$18.59 $19.39 (6 month rate)
Basic Function:
Maintains campus grounds to include snow and ice management lawn maintenance landscaping leaf collection excavation treework etc.. Reports to Groundskeeping Supervisor or other designated supervisor.

Examples of Duties:
Duties/essential functions may include but not be limited to the following:
Operates equipment such as zero turn mower compact tractors UTVs full size tractors dump trucks snow plows leaf collector frontend loaders hydroseeder refuse trucks bucket truck street sweeper compact tracked/skid steer loader and weed sprayers.
Performs snow and ice management to include spreading salt or sand plowing snow pretreating hardscape.
Maintains campus lawns to include mowing and repairing grass (hydroseeding) and slope mowing.
Creates or reduces landscape beds apply chemicals hardscape repair and installation.
Collects and blows leaves.
Assists in excavation work to include shoring labor measuring/spotting and utility location.
Plants trims and removes trees.
Cleans and repairs streets cleans catch basins and exterior drains.
Performs general labor and maintenance functions; loads and unloads freight; rigging; arranges stock in warehouse; repairs guardrails; moves equipment. May drive a truck with tow trailer to haul equipment and supplies to pick up and deliver materials equipment and personnel.
Makes minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; checks and services equipment; greases and oils machinery; checks tires and lights.
Performs traffic control for roadway utility and tree work zones.
Assists skilled tradespersons as necessary.
May train and direct student employees or employees in a lower pay grade; may participate in training new employees.
Performs departmental related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:
A minimum of six months experience operating motorized equipment.
License/Certification:
Must possess valid Ohio drivers license with safe driving record or Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with proper endorsements and safe driving record if assigned to operate vehicles regulated by Section 4506.01 of Ohio Revised Code or obtain as soon as possible with extension up to 6 months from date of will be subject to controlled substance/alcohol testing in positions where such is required by federal regulations.
Knowledge Of:
Appropriate safety practices *
Excavation procedures and best practices
Chainsaw operation and maintenance
Groundskeeping
Landscaping
Skill In:
Operating and maintaining various types of grounds maintenance equipment (e.g. mower tractor chain saw sod cutter rotary tiller snow thrower dump truck refuse truck street sweeper tracked skid steer front end loader bucket truck hydroseeder etc.) *
Utilizing mobile and stationary computer devices for data input (e.g. iPad iPod laptop desktop)
Use of hand and power tools *
Ability To:
Demonstrate physical dexterity and lift 100 pounds *
Apply safety practices
Read (e.g. work orders service and operation manuals blueprints) write (e.g. repair requests) and accurately follow oral and written instructions
Perform basic mathematics (e.g. add subtract multiply and divide whole numbers fractions and decimals and to calculate area and volume and percentages calculate and estimate materials ) *
Perform maintenance within the scope of operators/owners manual

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:
Works primarily outdoors; exposed to variable temperatures and weather conditions dirt dust grease steam chemicals loud equipment noise odors and potentially dangerous equipment (e.g. tractors frontend loaders); requires considerable physical exertion to include frequent lifting of up to 75 pounds (e.g. jackhammer tools etc.) occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds and extended periods of sitting and standing; may work varied hours and shifts to include weekends evenings and holidays; may be called to work in emergency situations; requires on and offcampus travel.
Working Schedule:
Monday through Friday 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; however schedule may vary to meet departmental needs.
