The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the Citys evolving criminal justice system participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees visitors volunteers and people in our custody. Importantly safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully reenter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.
We are seeking a highly analytical and detailoriented Data Scientist to help extract insights from large datasets and drive datadriven decisionmaking. The ideal candidate should have expertise in statistical analysis machine learning and data visualization with a strong understanding of business applications.
Key Responsibilities:
Collect clean and preprocess large datasets for analysis.
Develop predictive models and machine learning algorithms to solve business problems.
Conduct statistical analysis and hypothesis testing to support decisionmaking.
Visualize data and insights using tools like Tableau Power BI or Matplotlib.
Collaborate with engineering and product teams to implement datadriven solutions.
Optimize data pipelines and ETL processes for scalability and efficiency.
Stay updated with industry trends and advancements in AI/ML technologies.
Communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders in a clear actionable manner.
PREFERRED SKILLS
Bachelors or Masters degree in Data Science Computer Science Mathematics or a related field.
2 years of experience in data science or analytics.
Experience with Big Data tools such as Spark or Hadoop.
Proficiency in Python or R for data analysis and machine learning.
Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases.
Strong understanding of machine learning techniques (e.g. regression classification clustering).
Familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS GCP or Azure.
Experience with deep learning frameworks like TensorFlow or PyTorch is a plus.
Excellent problemsolving skills and the ability to work with unstructured data.
Strong communication skills for presenting datadriven insights to nontechnical stakeholders.
Good to have;
Knowledge of A/B testing and experimentation methods.

Qualifications :
As of June of the Program year the prospective interne must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program June August each year.
