Primary Purpose:
Direct and manage the overall program of instructional music for the assigned campus(es). Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state University Interscholastic League (UIL) and district requirements. Plan activities and set goals to achieve district region and state recognition.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelors degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certification or permit with required endorsements for subject
and level assigned
Other requirements set by Board of Education
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program
Ability to manage budget and personnel
Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band
Ability to interpret policy procedures and data
Strong communication public relations and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Band director or band assistant band director experience preferred
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Planning
- Direct high school junior high and intermediate instrumental performers including marching bandconcert band soloists and all ensembles as needed or required.
- Establish performance requirements enforce academic requirements and verify each students eligibility to participate in band.
- Provide for band participation at extracurricular activities including concerts football games pep rallies parades and UIL activities as needed or required.
- Arrange transportation lodging and meals for outoftown events in accordance with district procedures.
- Comply with federal and state laws State Board of Education UIL rules and board policy as they apply to band.
- Support and supervise band booster club activities.
- Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.
Budget and inventory
- Ensure that programs are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
- Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
- Coordinate fundraising activities as approved by the district and manage funds associated with such fundraisers.
- Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within the department.
- Oversee process of cleaning repairing and storing all band equipment.
Instruction
- Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
- Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
- Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency board policies and administrative regulations.
- Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies activities materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
- Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing and observations.
- Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical social and emotional development of students.
Student Management
- Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and Student handbook.
- Accompany and supervise students on outoftown trips ensuring adequate number of sponsors as required.
- Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
- Refer students to special programs as needed.
Communication
- Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents students principals and teachers.
- Maintain professional relationships with colleagues students parents and community members.
- Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
Personnel Management
- Assist with recruitment selection training supervision and evaluation of assistant band directors as needed.
- Works in harmony with peers and associates. Insure and implement strategies to guide effective vertical team alignment.
Professional Growth and Development
- Participate in staff development to improve jobrelated skills.
- Document staff development/professional growth/curriculum planning hours for Standard Certificate Renewal if on a standard certificate with 5year expiration.
- Participates in TTESS evaluation and displays accepts supervision for and feedback of duty performance.
- Responds to suggestions for improvements in a positive manner.
- Displays professionalism in dealing with students parents staff and community.
- Is punctual and maintains regular attendance.
- Maintains a professional appearance.
- Maintains confidentiality of student records as appropriate.
- Uses professional information discreetly and judiciously.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Monitor the performance of assistant band director(s) and aide(s).
Working Conditions
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent district and occasional statewide travel; prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun heat cold and inclement weather. Frequent lifting stooping climbing standing and bending.
