Job Description

Westfield Public Schools is seeking qualified applicants for an Art Teacher for theschool year.RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of authorized administrators shall:
  1. Teach knowledge and skills in art including crafts drawing painting lettering design commercial art art history and threedimensional art to elementary students utilizing the course of study adopted by the Westfield Public Schools and appropriate curriculum publications as guidelines in teaching individual course content
  2. Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district
  3. Provide instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciation and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art
  4. Demonstrate techniques in activities such as drawing painting and modeling using standard and teacherprepared instruction aids
  5. Develop instructional plans and organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction demonstration and working time
  6. Provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.
  7. Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
  8. Plans and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students work for the school and the community.
  9. Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly productive classroom environment.
  10. Identify students needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health attitude and learning problems.
  11. Supervise students in outofclassroom activities during the assigned work day.
  12. Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  13. Maintain professional competence through inservice education.
  14. Participate in faculty committees and sponsorship of student activities.
  15. Work cooperatively with all aspects of the school administrative team/faculty and citizens to insure the highest quality of educational programs.
  16. Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the building principal or Superintendent of Schools.
  17. Work is generally conducted within school building. Ability to travel throughout the school building is necessary. Position involves sitting and the ability to travel from one place to another within the classroom. Work is light in nature with regular lifting of up to 10 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds with some pulling and pushing or reaching above generally of desk and file drawers. Frequent use of hands to operate keyboards and telephones and other office equipment. Regular attendance on site is an essential function of this job.
The salary and terms of employment will be commensurate with the Westfield Education Association Unit A contract. Salary placement will be based on information contained in the application as on this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Westfield School committee policy on evaluation.
