About Cooktown Museum & National Trust of Australia Queensland
The historic landmark previously known as James Cook Museum is situated in the rich history town of Cooktown and is set in a stunning nineteenthcentury convent. Cooktown Museum has been reimagined to proudly tell the fascination stories of the region. Experience the history of this beautifully restored Sisters of Mercy convent school building built in 188889 which is an embodiment of everything the NTAQ represents: to protect conserve and celebrate the Environmental Built and Cultural heritage of our State.
As we work towards sharing the amazing stories and the extensive collection of artefacts with our guests and continue to bring fascinating stories for future generations we are seeking motivated and passionate Casual Museum Guides to ensure a valuable guest experience and to oversee the property and volunteer teams at this special heritage site.
About the Role
As a Museum Guide you will hold responsibility for welcoming visitors and hosting them around the property sharing stories of the collection items to engage and educate visitors in the complete history of the region. You will report directly to the permanent staff working as part of a small friendly team.
This Museum Guide role involves general museum guide duties such as conducting site tours customer service retail sales cash handling administration collection care and cleaning duties. Work hours will be highly variable based on the season. Weekend work will be required and the availability to cover periods of leave for other Museum staff.
About You
To be successful in this role you must have experience in presenting information in a memorable interesting and enjoyable manner to guests of all ages and nationalities.
Other key skills and qualifications we are looking for include:
- Must have good local knowledge of the town and regional attractions
- Must have flexible availability which will includes working over school holiday periods
- Must be a person who is a positive ambassador for National Trust; very friendly and well presented
- Should have previous experience with working productively within a small team must be a cooperative team player able to follow direction without supervision and demonstrate initiative to complete job tasks
- Can demonstrate a flexible cooperative cando attitude. A friendly motivated and calm manner is essential with the ability to handle minor customer complaints
- You will require cash handling and sales skills as the museum has a small retail department
- Health fitness and ability to walk distances stand for long periods carry loads up to 10kg climb stairs and work in hot conditions and to perform all requirements of the role
