Description


This position is responsible for supervising assigned athletic and nonathletic recreation programs and for supervising and participating in the maintenance of sports fields tennis courts aquatic facilities parks and other facilities.

Major Duties

  • Plans organizes and implements a variety of athletic and non/athletic programs; manages program registration.

  • Coordinates the maintenance of program equipment and supply inventories; makes approved purchases; distributes equipment uniforms and supplies to appropriate parties.

  • Reviews programs for quality assurance to assess the need to discontinue revise or develop new programs.

  • Recruits trains and supervises fulltime parttime seasonal program and maintenance staff coaches and volunteers.

  • Assists in the development of promotional and marketing plans to inform the public of facilities programs and events.

  • Supervises and participates in the maintenance of facilities pools tennis courts parks fields grounds etc.

  • Operates a variety of grounds maintenance equipment; mows grass cuts weeds repairs landscaping and collects litter leaves and debris.

  • Maintains and repairs bleachers fences dug outs and other structures as needed; paints interior and exterior surfaces.

  • Prepares courts pools fields and other facilities for lessons practices games matches and tournaments.

  • Assists in coordinating a variety of special tournaments programs and events.

  • Enforces department and city policies and procedures.

  • Responds to questions concerns and complaints from the public and other interested parties.

  • Documents any accident or incident or failure to adhere to set policies.

  • Ensures compliance with all program guidelines and safety requirements.

  • Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of athletic and other leisure services program management principles.

  • Knowledge of sports associations rules and bylaws.

  • Knowledge of grounds and facility maintenance principles.

  • Knowledge of state and city purchasing guidelines.

  • Knowledge of computers and jobrelated software programs.

  • Skill in the management training and supervision of personnel.

  • Skill in planning.

  • Skill in decision making and problem solving.

  • Skill in interpersonal relations and dealing with the public.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

  • Ability to coordinate recreational activities involving several participants.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spotchecks completed work for compliance with procedures accuracy and the nature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include relevant sports association guidelines state purchasing laws fire and building codes chemical application guidelines and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related supervisory program development and implementation and maintenance duties. The variety of tasks to be performed contributes to the complexity of the position.

  • The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in assigned recreation programs and in the maintenance of assigned facilities. Successful performance in this position contributes to the efficient and effective delivery of recreation services to the public.

CONTACTS

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers other city personnel volunteers parttime staff vendors and the public.

  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information resolve problems provide services and motivate persons.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting standing stooping or walking. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects (25 50lbs) climbs ladders uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity and distinguishes between shades of color.

  • The work is typically performed in an office in athletic facilities and outdoors occasionally in cold hot or inclement weather. Work may require the use of protective devices such as masks goggles gloves etc.

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

This position has direct supervision over assigned personnel.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited* college or university with a bachelors degree in Recreation Physical Education or a closely related field; and

  • One (1) year fulltime experience in the supervision of activities or grounds maintenance in a specialty (recreation/athletics/aquatics/therapeutics /seniors/other).

  • Possession of a current/valid certification in the following is preferred:

  1. Alabama Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA) Professional Recreator Certificate
  2. Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) Certification
  3. CPR/First Aid Instructor
  4. Certified Festival & Events Associate Certification
  5. Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP)
  6. Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI)
  7. Certified Pool Operator (CPO)
  8. Certified Sports Field Manager (CSFM)
  9. Certified Sports Official (Such as Dixie Youth Special Olympics etc.)
  10. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS)
  11. Certified Youth Sports Administrator
  12. Group Fitness Instructor (From an Accredited Institution/Program)
  13. Ornamental and Turf Pest Control Supervisor or Custodial (OTPS/OTPC) Certification
  14. Personal Trainer Certification (From an Accredited Institution/Program)
  15. ServSafe Manager Certificate
  16. Trail Maintenance Management and/or Master Certification
  17. Turfgrass Management Certification
  18. USA Archery Level I Instructor Certification
  19. Water Safety Instructor (WSI) Certification

  • Possession of a current/valid American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR/AED certificate preferred.

*Accredited through an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education (CHEA).

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • A valid driver license and an acceptable driving record. (PBA09/10/01)

  • Employees in this position are required to successfully complete at least one (1) of the following certifications within one (1) year of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer. (See condition for details.)

  • Employees in this position are required to successfully complete the Recreation Supervisor Online Training module within six (6) months of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer. (See condition for details.)

  • Employees in this position are required to obtain/maintain an American Heart Association or American Red Cross CPR/AED certificate within six (6) months of employment/promotion/demotion/transfer. (See condition for details.)

  • An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including a criminal credit past employment and reference checks.

  • Employees are required submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy which includes preemployment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 08/13/12)

  • Must meet the City of Dothans employment physical standards which include drug/alcohol testing.
