Phlebotomist, Lab

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Phlebotomists are responsible for obtaining blood specimens and collecting nonblood specimens such as urine sputum and throat swabs for laboratory testing. Phlebotomists have a strong eye for detail excellent interpersonal skills proficient verbal and written English skills and the ability to prioritize a variety of tasks.

Responsibilities for a phlebotomist include but are not limited to:

• Preparing patients before drawing blood
• Explaining blood draw procedures to patients and answering any questions about the process
• Verifying patient information and labeling blood samples properly
• Accurately updating patient information in the organizations database
• Helping nervous or frightened patients remain calm during blood draws
• Processes specimens to prepare them for laboratory testing
• Prepares specimens for reference laboratory dispatch and testing
• Resolves ambiguous and/or unusual test orders by contacting the physician of the order pathologist nursing station or reference laboratory
• Maintains compliance with laboratory and hospital policies and procedures and safety practices.
• Keeps work area neat and clean and restocks daily supplies.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:

Required: None

Preferred Experience: 1 year experience in a healthcare clinical setting

Education:

Required: High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

Preferred: Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program

Certification:

Required: BLS

Preferred: Phlebotomy Certification or Medical Assistant Certification
