Job Description

Title: Academic Department Head (Leadership and Counseling)

General Summary

The Department of Leadership and Counseling seeks a Department Head to lead us in carrying out our mission:

The Leadership and Counseling Department develops caring and ethical educational leaders and professional counselors through coconstructed teaching and learning experiences respectful service and community engagement and intentional research and inquiry to promote equity. We prepare courageous leaders and mental health practitioners to assume prominent roles in effecting positive change in clients students families and communities in local and global context.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Advance the departments mission and vision in alignment with college and university goals and priorities.
Support student success.
Provide departmental leadership in the development of new and revision of existing initiatives and programs with faculty input.
Facilitate and support program accreditation and authorization efforts.
Champion faculty development and advancement; supervise and evaluate faculty performance for tenure promotion and supplemental salary adjustment recommendations to the Dean of the College.
Supervise department staff.
Administer collective bargaining agreements.
Responsibly steward department resources including budget and administer department operations with input from faculty.
Participate and represent the department/college across campus and in local regional and national professional associations.
Establish and maintain external relations including but not limited to alumni governmental educational mental healthcare and community agencies.
Participate and contribute to collegewide initiatives and strategy as part of the Deans executive leadership group.
Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Demonstrated commitment contribution and achievement in equity inclusion justice and belonging in diverse educational environments.
An earned doctorate in a field represented by one of the departments programs (or closely related) from an accredited institution.
An outstanding record of teaching scholarship and service that would merit appointment and tenure as associate or full professor at Eastern Michigan University.
At least two years experience in a leadership role aligned with academic administration (e.g. program coordinator associate department chair/head department chair/head) or related experience.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with collective bargaining units in higher education.
Demonstrated achievement in supporting graduate student success in higher education.
Demonstrated knowledge of contemporary issues facing mental health professions higher education and/or public schooling systems and the ability to address challenges faced by graduate programs in leadership and counseling.
Professional experience with doctoral education including successful chairing of doctoral dissertations.
Experience supporting the development and advancement of new and experienced faculty and effective supervision and development of staff (including clinical settings (e.g. counseling training clinic personnel).
Experience in online education including synchronous and asynchronous platforms.
Evidence of successful community engagement.
