Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS) String Orchestra Director
Position Overview:
Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS) is seeking a String Orchestra Director to lead its afterschool orchestral program. The director will oversee rehearsals repertoire selection and performances while fostering a dynamic and inclusive learning environment for student musicians.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct weekly orchestra rehearsals. Hours and timing are negotiable.
Select repertoire and program concerts that align with students abilities and musical growth.
Determine seating placements within the orchestra based on musical and ensemble needs.
Ensure open access to the program by accepting all students with some proficiency on their instrument fostering an inclusive and supportive musical environment.
Assess and grade students based on performance progress and overall engagement in the orchestra program. This can be a pass/fail system or graded letter system depending on the preference of the director.
Coordinate concert production with colleagues and administration.
Lead and prepare students for two major concerts per year.
Collaborate with the band director to provide music for graduation commencement.
Communicate with families regarding performances student progress program expectations and family involvement as needed.
Assist in coordinating student participation in the Junior/Senior Districts Auditions and AllState which entails identifying and supporting eligible students as well as providing audition materials for some.
Communicate with Grades 58 string teachers to align curriculum and recruit students into the program. The extent of these efforts is at the directors discretion.
Manage the string instrument inventory including:
Assigning schoolowned instruments and lockers to students.
Ensuring students understand instrument care responsibilities.
Keeping track of instrument loans and ensuring proper returns.
Identifying instruments in need of maintenance or repair at the end of the school year.
MinimumRequirements:
Experience:
At least 2 years of experience conducting or directing string ensembles preferably at the middle or high school level.
Demonstrated experience working with student musicians of varying skill levels in an educational or community setting.
Musical Skills:
Proficiency in a string instrument and comprehensive knowledge of orchestral string repertoire.
Strong conducting and rehearsal technique with the ability to prepare students for performances.
Instructional & Interpersonal Skills:
Ability to create a welcoming inclusive environment that supports musical and socialemotional growth.
Excellent organizational and communication skills especially in collaborating with students families and school staff.
Length of Contract:
September 8 2025 through June 12 2026
Contract Amount
Flat Rate $2275.00
