Job Description

The School Programs team provides opportunities to explore the worlds natural and cultural diversity through meaningful learning experiences for PreK12th grade students educators and community organizations. The School Programs team prepares students and educators to learn through authentic investigations with museum collections through the development of learning resources workshops in classrooms and in communities professional development for teachers and field trips to the Museum.

As a member of the Learning Resources and Teacher Professional Development team the School Programs Intern will support efforts to modernize and update the Harris Learning Collection. This project will include updating existing curricular resources to include Next Generation Science Standards C3 Framework Common Core State Standards and Social Justice Standards. This project also includes working with scientists and education staff to update content to meet evolving updates to science. Additionally this internship will include working on supporting the development of new Harris Toolkits including developing curriculum assessing materials and building of the toolkit. This position requires ease with digital and physical resource design in collaboration with staff across the museum knowledge of inquiry and problembased learning methods.

The School Programs Intern primary supervisor is the Manager of Learning Resources and Teacher Professional Development however they will work closely with other staff members in the Education and Public Programs as well as Collections Scientific Staff and Marketing Departments.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support updates to Harris Learning Collection toolkits experience boxes and exhibit cases which includes but is not limited to:

    • Update Activity Guides to include current state standards

    • Update Activity Guides to include current scientific research.

    • Update Activity Guide Lesson Plans

    • Update materials in toolkits and experience boxes to include modern science and technology.

  • Support development of new Harris Learning resources

    • Work with Professional Development Educators to support the development of new learning materials.

    • Identify materials for learning materials.

    • Create lessons and activities for learning materials.

    • Support with landscaping for new taxidermy specimens (dependent on comfort and skill/interest).

  • Support general School Programs

    • Support School Programs events i.e. science nights Members Nights and other programs as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Bachelors Degree in relevant fields of education teaching and learning curriculum instruction.

  • Experience working in PreK12th grade education preferred.

  • Outstanding written communication: able to structure ideas clearly develop written curriculum materials using best practice models and independently developed curriculum formats and clearly communicate ideas verbally and in writing.

  • Strong digital skills including proficiency in Google Suites Microsoft Office and Adobe Suite preferred.

  • Knowledge experience developing and teaching lessons and demonstrated ability of learning standards (NGSS C3 Framework Common Core Social Justice Frameworks) required.

  • Strong commitment to Diversity Equity Accessibility and Inclusion as well as Social Justice standards and principles.

  • Wellorganized detailoriented independently motivated and able to work in a fastpaced environment.

  • Ideal candidates should be available to work onsite at the museum 15 hours per week during regular business hours

Desired start date of 06/16/25 with a term date of 8/08/25; 15 hours per week.
