Job Description

Description

The City of Battle Creek is looking for a sworn officer that services as the Police Department point of contact for Summit Pointe medical institutions and specialty courts regarding Community Mental Health related issues and training. Follows up with CIT referrals to ensure continuity of process and systems. Also works to identify and correct system gaps throughout the CMH process. Conducts community referrals and engages in community awareness. Performs related duties as required. The CMH Liaison Officer must possess case management skills effective organizational management skills technological capabilities interpersonal relationship skills and a compassion for persons in mental crisis and the systems of care. This position is part time and can work up to 30 hours/week.

Examples of Duties

  • Perform job functions of a sworn police officer
  • Coordinate CIT training with Summit Pointe and BCPD
  • Corespond to CIT calls for service with BCPD officers BCPD Clinician or Summit Pointe Crisis Team when needed
  • Refer appropriate clients in need of mental health and substance use disorder to appropriate provider
  • Address issues or concerns involving response training and/or procedural process for persons in mental crisis
  • Coordinate with Summit Pointe specialty courts Bronson Battle Creek and BCPD to address system gaps for service
  • Work in conjunction with BCPD Clinician to conduct followup needs assessments of the frequent users of CMH resources and make referrals as needed
  • Assist BCPD Investigations Units and the Victim Services Unit addressing victims of violent crime in mental crisis
  • Maintain awareness of service and service requirements for Summit Pointe
  • Work with mental health court and the Calhoun County Prosecutors Office for jail diversion when case appropriate
  • Communicate with BCPD Community Fusion Center partners for information sharing and synchronization of services
  • Assist with programmatic and financial grant reporting
  • Perform administrative duties as assigned including ensuring quality control of CMH related reports in BCPD records management system
  • Availability to respond to critical incidents as needed (oncall status)
  • Perform related duties as required

Typical Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree preferred with coursework in criminal justice psychology sociology social work or related field
  • Licensed or able to meet licensing requirements as set by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES)
  • Five or more years of experience in police outreach services community programs CMH collaboration or related experience
  • Lived experience addressing personal mental health concerns
  • Ability to complete required training through Summit Pointe
Special Requirements:
  • Valid drivers license in the State of Michigan

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Expected to perform the following for it is a critical part of the position: running driving motor vehicles at a high rate of speed lifting (over 50 lbs.) pushing or pulling climbing bending reaching hand dexterity (grasping holding) reading writing eyehand coordination seeing (near and/or far color depth field of vision) hearing talking contact with the general public working independently overtime inside and outside and at night.
