Head Custodian
Purpose Statement
The role of Head Custodian is to supervise custodial staff at their assigned building ensuring a clean orderly and safe environment. Head custodians work alongside their team performing a wide variety of cleaning and maintenance activities on building campuses. Head custodians ensure each campus is attractive sanitary and safe for students staff and visitors. Duties may include performing daily cleaning operations assisting and preparing our building for activities and campus events and working collaboratively with the custodian team maintenance team and building team.

Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- Ability to read basic operating instructions
- Demonstrates a reasonable degree of computer proficiency
Essential Functions
- Work well with others maintain a positive and effective communication with the building custodial team school personnel and students.
- Provides leadership that contributes to a positive work environment.
- Cleans assigned facilities and/or grounds (e.g. classrooms offices gym restrooms cafeteria multipurpose rooms pools grounds etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary safe and attractive environment.
- Monitors activities in and around work areas (e.g. halls multipurpose rooms lunch room restrooms grounds etc.) for the purpose of preventing injuries and ensuring site safety.
- Performs minor job related maintenance on custodial equipment classroom furniture and fixtures (e.g. change vacuum cleaner belts bags etc.) for the purpose of ensuring proper functioning and usability of items.
- Prepares campus for daily operations (e.g. opening gates raising flags sweeping walkway etc.) for the purpose of ensuring facilities are operational and hazard free.
- Replenishes classroom and restroom supplies (e.g. paper towels soap etc.) for the purpose of ensuring adequate quantities for daily use.
- Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns (e.g. facility damage vandalism alarms etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action or notifying appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Responds to inquiries from staff students parents and/or visitors for the purpose of providing information taking appropriate action and/or directing to appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Secures facilities and grounds (e.g. doors gates alarms lights etc.) for the purpose of minimizing property damage equipment loss and/or potential liability.
- Performs summer maintenance (e.g. strip/wax floors moves furniture painting etc.) for the purpose of completing and/or facilitating summer construction.
- Supports District maintenance staff (e.g. grounds trades general maintenance etc.) for the purpose of completing site custodial activities.
- Informs site personnel for the purpose of providing information and direction regarding activities safety issues and/or proper maintenance of facilities and equipment.
- Attends meetings inservice training workshops etc. for the purpose of gathering information required to perform job functions.
Other Functions
- Participate in staff development training programs faculty meetings and special events as assigned.
- Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work without close supervision.
- Demonstrates integrity and maintains confidentiality.
- Works well with others maintaining positive and effective communication with school personnel and works well with other custodians on jobs that require more than one person.
- Is respectful and appropriately interacts with staff students and visitors.
- Upholds and adheres to safety rules and policies of the Ankeny Community School District safety program.
- Supports the goals and objectives of the school district and follows all district policies.
- Demonstrates the ability to attend work on a regular and routine basis to avoid disruption to
- district operations.
- Perform all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or others.
- Responds to emergency situations for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns and/or directing appropriate personnel for resolution.
- Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Working Environment
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
The usual and customary methods of performing the position functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting carrying pushing pulling climbing reaching driving standing and walking. Working conditions may include extreme temperatures and humidity. Hazards may include exposure to communicable diseases. This position requires one to maintain emotional control under stress. Successful candidates are subject to postoffer preemployment physical.
