Job Goal(s):
The primary job goal of the English Language Learner Resource Teacher is to provide supplementary instruction for English as a Second Language to Multilingual learners. Assignment will be determined by the Administrator of Multilingual.
ESL teachers are to assist in implementing the Language Assistance Plan of the assigned district(s). The secondary goal for this position is to provide academic social and emotional support services to ESL students and their families as necessary to promote success within the educational setting and increase student and family engagement. In addition providing services to our migrant learners alongside other staff members at designated locations off campus.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
A bachelors degree in education is required
Certification:
A Michigan teaching certificate with an endorsement in elementary education is preferred and either a bilingual endorsement in Spanish or an endorsement in English as a Second Language is required
OR
Willingness to get the endorsement in the next 3 years (must be enrolled in a program within one year of employment).
Work Experience:
A minimum of one year of experience working with disadvantaged children is preferred
Skills:
- Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred
- Ability to relate to and advocate for culturally diverse and atrisk populations
- Ability to collaborate with other school staff to achieve maximum benefits for all students
- Ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders to provide appropriate programs and/or accommodations for Multilingual students
- Possess appropriate instructional and behavior management skills
- Previous training in using Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol
Essential Job Functions:
- Identify all potential Multilingual students in the assigned district. Assist with the assessment of English language proficiency for new/returning students in accordance with the Michigan Department of Education Entrance and Exit Protocol for English Language Learners and district procedures.
- Assist with the annual WIDA assessment of all English Language Learners enrolled in the assigned school district during the assessment window. Meet with local district administrators to review assessment results review the districts Language Assistance Plan and exit and/or reenter students based upon their annual assessment results and MDE Entrance/Exit protocol of MLs.
- Demonstrate effective instructional practices for planning and organizing instruction that supports the core curriculum delivered in the district and is appropriate for ESL students.
- Monitor and document student progress and provide evidence of student growth or the lack thereof on individual goals behavior and the districts Language Assistance Plan.
- Contact ELL parents promote communications between families district staff and assist families in accessing community resources and agencies that benefit students needs.
- Submit a daily time study (PARs) to the program administrator completed biweekly of the names of students served and their learning targets for that period. Maintain and provide the program administrator with accurate ML student enrollment information monthly.
- Provide English lessons using lessons from IDRC and iSOSY consortium or a curriculum approved by the Administrator of Multilingual/Migrant Services
- Participate in the professional learning community and strive to increase knowledge of the curriculum materials and strategies that are effective for ML students.
- Maintain and provide to the program administrator accurate migrant/ESL student enrollmentInformation monthly.
- Complete assigned responsibilities within agreedupon or established timelines and adhere to Van Buren ISD policies and procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the program administrator and/or VBISD Superintendent.
- Valid drivers license required.
