The London Metal Exchange is the world centre for industrial metals trading. Most of the worlds nonferrous metals business is conducted on the LME and the metals community uses the LME a member of HKEX Group as a venue to transfer or take on price risk as a physical market of last resort and as the provider of transparent global reference prices.

The Sustainability and Physical Markets team (SPM) is responsible for the strategy delivery and operation of the LMEs physical market and sustainability activity. This incorporates both strategic development of all areas of the LMEs physical ecosystem including future commercialisation sustainability overall management of physical market relationships including producers of LMElisted brands and the operation of the LMEs physical network including LME warehousing operation of the LME approved brands list and operation of LME responsible sourcing and LMEpassport.

The SPM team is split into two closely linked subdivisions responsible for either development and strategic activities or operational activities. This role sits on the development side supporting the Sustainability Manager with the execution of the strategic direction of the programme based on stakeholder engagement data experience and research. This role will involve representing the LME at industry events and thus involves professionalism wider knowledge of the business curiosity and networking ability.

This role will involve independent management of aspects of the responsible sourcing programme and management of data relating to LMElisted brands including on LMEpassport (a digital credentials register). The LME plays a significant role in the global metals industrys sustainable development and will be evolving in the coming years. The individual in the role will have the opportunity to provide input into these areas of work and help shape the sustainability offering of the LME.

Responsibilities

Sustainability and Physical Markets

This role supports the daytoday management and operation of the initiatives under the SPM team. This includes:

  • Critical review of internal processes anticipating challenges and contributing to improvements
  • Support the innovation of the LMEs physical market data strategy by building strong relationships with Chinese brand producers and proactively address enquiries and escalate key issues to the Sustainability Manager and SPM team to ensure seamless communication and effective problemsolving
  • Proactive engagement with other teams within the LME (including SPM Operations and Market Development) promoting coordination efficiency and teamwork
  • Regular liaison with all producers of LMElisted brands downstream companies and other stakeholders answering queries and raising larger issues to the SPM team as needed
  • Lead the research on relevant regulations or related emerging issues in the metals industry particularly related to the Chinese market
  • Analysis and research both quantitative and qualitative on topics identified by the sustainability team and internal key performance indicators
  • Preparation of presentation materials for conferences and meetings

Responsible sourcing strategy & operations

  • Support the Sustainability Manager in the management of LME producersubmitted sustainability data related to their value chain
  • Lead on providing regular updates to senior management on the status of responsible sourcing of metal producers globally
  • Raise and monitor risks related to responsible sourcing including reviewing news & various other sources

Sustainability strategy

  • Contribute to managing producer sustainability data by enhancing data integration with LME platforms.
  • Support the development of innovative strategies to improve sustainability data management and identify commercial opportunities within these processes
  • Provide analysis and research both quantitative and qualitative on topics identified by the SPM team

Academic and professional qualifications required:

  • Educated to bachelors degree level (minimum 2:1 or equivalent)
  • Relevant graduate degree or professional certification in environmental science mining sustainability or commodities market preferred
