Job Description

The Department of Enrichment and Extended Learning is responsible for the planning and oversight of afterschool vacation and summer learning opportunities that meet the unique needs and pathways for students attending Holyoke Public Schools. We believe that if we:

  • Identify the knowledge and skills needed for students to step up successfully and develop a project based standards aligned curriculum across all grade levels
  • Embed research best practices throughout every aspect of program design
  • Engage CBOs and other enrichment providers in planning and implementing bold innovative project based and standards informed enrichment
  • Engage and support the best teachers through high quality curriculum resources professional learning and ongoing observation and feedback
  • Involve and build relationships with students and families throughout the process

Holyoke Public Schools offers programming that reinforces skills learned during the year strengthens skills identified as areas of concern and provides a supportive environment for student academic and socioemotional growth.

DESCRIPTION: Reporting to the Manager of Enrichment and Extended Learning the Academic Teacher works with the Academic Coordinator and Site Supervisor to plan and deliver high quality instruction during the program. The program is designed to accelerate student learning through engaging standardsaligned lessons. To ensure student success the academic teacher will also coordinate with support staff to implement effective classroom management techniques and reinforcement of academic standards.

Academic Teacher PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

PreProgram Work

  • Attend PAID curriculum orientation and professional development sessions on June 27 & 28
  • Engage in curriculum development and planning with the academic coordinators

Job description:

  • Meet and instruct assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated.
  • Implement and augment skill and projectbased learning curricula based on students academic and language proficiency levels that include literacy and mathematics
  • Provide students with Tier II intervention support
  • Work collaboratively with grade level teachers
  • Use assessment data to plan instruction and differentiate as needed.
  • Plan a program of study that as much as possible meets the individual needs interests and abilities of the students and employs a variety of instructional techniques and media.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of students.
  • Strive to implement by instruction and action the districts philosophy of education instructional goals and objectives.
  • Assess the accomplishments of students regularly and provide progress reports as required.
  • Maintain accurate complete and correct records as required by law district policy and administrative regulations.
  • Plan and supervise purposeful assignments for teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and cooperatively with department heads evaluate their job performance.
  • Strive to maintain and improve professional competence.
  • Attend staff meetings and preseason professional development sessions
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager of Enrichment and Extended Learning and Academic Coordinator.

Partner with families and community members:

  • Build relationships and engage frequently with parents and community members as critical partners in the school community
  • Thoroughly understand the diverse cultures and backgrounds of students and families

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors Degree
  • License required
  • Ability to develop Early Literacy Skills
  • Commitment to ensuring academic success for all students
  • Experience working in an urban setting preferred
  • Experience working with diverse student populations preferred
  • Ability to read interpret and apply student performance data to instructional planning and execution
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent teamwork skills
  • Bilingual applicants (Spanish) strongly encouraged to apply
