Job Description

SCHOOL OVERVIEW

PURPOSE: Utilizing leadership advocacy and collaboration school counselors promote student success provide preventive services and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic career and personal/social development for all students.

The major functions of the school counselor job description incorporate the North Carolina State Board of Educations guiding mission that every public school student will graduate from high school globally competitive for work and postsecondary education and prepared for life in the twentyfirst century.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

*MUST have an MSW/ LCSW*

Summary:

The school social workers at Sugar Creek Charter School are responsible for establishing a home community and school linkages supporting the social and emotional needs of students providing counseling for students consulting with teachers and administrative staff in an effort to reduce barriers that may prevent students from performing well in school.

Essential Duties:

  • Assesses student and family challenges and creates work plans to support identified needs
  • Utilizes data to identify atrisk students recognize school trends and drive programmatic decision making
  • Monitors effectiveness of interventions on student outcomes
  • Contributes to identifying and intervening in student attendance concerns
  • Collaborates with other support team members and school personnel to serve students from a multitiered perspective
  • Recognizes and focuses on student strengths and utilizes them to develop and enhance leadership qualities in students
  • Conduct risk assessments for students who may be expressing suicidal ideations and selfharm behaviors
  • Supports students with suspected or confirmed mental health challenges by coordinating appropriate services with internal and external resources
  • Demonstrates leadership by providing services that contribute to a positive school climate advocating for positive changes in school policies and practices and being a model for ethical professional practice
  • Serve as Foster Care Liaison to maintain compliance with State regulations
  • Serve as McKinney Vento Liaison to maintain compliance with State regulations
  • Facilitates relevant internal and external partnerships that support the schools mission
  • Provides professional development experiences to help staff better understand challenges students face that may interfere with academic success
  • Enhances the professional capacity of school personnel through consultation and support
  • Embraces work with diverse populations and demonstrates cultural sensitivity
  • Encourages parent engagement and explores ways to provide outreach to families and the surrounding school community
  • Provides responsive crisis support services at the individual school and district levels when needed
  • Documents services provided and reflects on practice to make necessary adjustments
  • Frequently conduct home visits to support atrisk families
  • Other duties as assigned

Education and Experience: Minimum

  • Masters degree in social work from an accredited social work program

Preferred


  • Two or more years of school social work experience

Physical Requirements:

Working at Sugar Creek Charter School requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech vision and hearing. The work requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations for typing and data entry. The work at times requires bending squatting and reaching with the ability to lift carry push or pull light weights. The work requires activities occasionally involving driving automotive equipment.
