Marine Safety Officer
Yamhill County Sheriffs Office is actively recruiting to create a pool of diverse candidates eligible for anticipated seasonal fulltime and parttime noncertified Marine Safety Officers (MSO) to work 12 36 hours per week. The anticipated duration of this position is approximately 3.5 months from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Regular work days are Friday Saturday and Sunday with occasional weekday shifts as needed.
Marine Safety Officers serve as the second operator on the boat and assist with boater safety through education and public assistance. This position works under the direct supervision of a marine boat captain and program manager sergeant and indirect supervision of the supervising sergeants and the division commander. Duties around and on the waterways of Yamhill County include but are not limited to performing safety inspections and examinations of various water craft and equipment responding to rescues boating accidents or other emergencies and making appearances at safety fairs and other events.

The CandidateThe successful candidates mustbe available to work regularly scheduled 10hour or 12hour shifts on Fridays Saturdays and Sundays between 0800 and midnight. Position will also require occasional weekday shifts.The successful candidates will possess good moral character demonstrate strong customer service and communication skills and put forth a professional image. They are skilled highly motivated selfdirected candidates with strong decision making and problemsolving skills as well as skill in communicating effectively with individuals during difficult and often stressful situations.

Minimum Experience and Training/Other Requirements
- The Qualifications:Applicants must be a United States citizen at least 16 years of age. Must possess an unrestricted stateissued drivers license with the ability to obtain an Oregon driver license a good driving record and a satisfactory work record and/or personal history (e.g. free of criminal convictions although special circumstances may be considered).Preference will be given to qualified applicants who are cadets in good standing with a law enforcement agency in Oregon former cadets who served at least six months and left in good standing from a law enforcement agencyin Oregon students enrolled in a Criminal Justice or Law Enforcement educational track or applicants who have previously served as an MSO with Yamhill County.Applicants who possess current Lifeguarding certification CPR/First Aid certification and/or an Oregon Boater Education card; and/or who possess bilingual fluency in English and Spanish are strongly encouraged to apply.Must be able to pass swim standards as set forth by the OSMB and Oregon State Sheriffs Association.All candidates will be required to pass a medical exam prior to appointment.All candidates must be able to pass a thorough background screening.ADDITIONAL LICENSES CERTIFICATES AND SPECIALTY REQUIREMENTS:Please refer to the Marine Safety Officer classification specification forthe official job description and additional licenses certifications and specialty requirements.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
The incumbent typically works on a boat and in outdoor areas using marine equipment as needed with associated noise levels and in varying weather conditions. Additionally the incumbent will work in an office environment using a computer telephone and other office equipment as needed to perform duties. The noise levels in these work environments will be typical to those of either an outdoor area on or near a body of water and/or that of an office. Work also may involve travel to meetings. Incumbent may encounter frequent interruptions throughout the work day.The employee is regularly required to sit talk or hear; frequently required to use repetitive hand motion handle or feel and to stand walk reach bend or lift up to 20 pounds.Contact with the public may risk exposure to irrational/hostile behavior contagious diseases or contact with domestic animals.
