Job Description

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of railroad operating practices rules and procedures especially as they relate to safety issues.
  • Knowledge of federal regulations and standards relating to railroad operations and requirements in such areas as hours of service accident reporting blue signal protection of workers rear end markers radio communication railroad employee qualifications and railroad employee testing (OP).
  • Knowledge of railroad track system construction maintenance testing or inspection techniques. Safety criteria for track structure and engineering (Track)
  • Knowledge of the capabilities and limitations of various track system configurations and Federal railroad track safety standards (Track)
  • Knowledge of determining compliance with OP or Track CFR Safety Standards.
  • Skilled in accident investigation.
  • Planning evaluating and decision-making skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to pass FRA certification.
  • Ability to complete required on-the-job training.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Education and Experience OP:

High School Diploma or GED and four years of experience relevant to the operating practices discipline.

Education and Experience Track:

High School Diploma or GED required and four years of experience relevant to Track discipline. A bachelors degree in engineering or engineering technology may be substituted for two years of experience.

The Public Service Commission is seeking two experienced Railroad Inspectors in the Operation Practice or Track disciplines. This exciting opportunity requires outstanding communication self-direction and ability to shift focus as changing circumstances require. The successful candidate will join our team of highly motivated staff who collaborate on interesting meaningful and critical work. Together we strive to meet our agencys goal of providing extraordinary service to the citizens of Montana.

OP and Track Responsibilities:

  • Ensure compliance with railroad operation test and inspection requirements.
  • Investigate serious railroad accidents and complaints form railroad employees or the general public regarding unsafe practices. .
  • Promote and enforce standards and regulations within assigned territory.
  • Inspect and report on the safety compliance conditions of the railroad track facilities safe working procedures and provisions of the employees and the surrounding track right-of-way areas (Track).
  • Write narrative reports that describe track conditions accidents incidents or safety violations (Track).
  • Present related railroad safety information to federal state local government and industry officials.
  • Perform inspections where defects are indicated to determine the seriousness of the problems and the best means of correction.
  • Prepare reports of violations when necessary collecting sufficient back-up evidence to support federal agency attorneys in prosecution.

Special Information:

Two positions are available and both are new to the agency. One position is focused on Operating Practice and the other is a Track discipline. Location is shown as Helena for the main office but location can be anywhere in Montana. Territory coverage includes all of Montana. Extensive travel 75% or greater is required. Minimal out-of-state travel required with advance notice.
