Job Description

Job Responsibilities

  • Reports directly to the Assistant Chief in assigned region as an agent for the SCDCs Office of Inspector GeneralSpecial Agent Victims Unit.
  • SVU agents actively participate in the detection of crime and enforcement of criminal law for the SCDC.
  • Plans conducts & completes criminal and/or administrative investigations or conducts portions of an investigation with other agents and performs tasks supporting other law enforcement agencies as requested.
  • Assist local and state law enforcement agencies as requested obtains and serves warrants when warranted.
  • Conducts criminal and administrative investigations. Gather and develop material facts and obtain supporting information relating to violations or possible violations of state or federal law. Interview or interrogate as appropriate suspects victims and witnesses to crimes or relevant matters; examine records collect physical and documentary evidence and establish contacts with law enforcement personnel and the public. Make arrests raids searches and seizures; serves subpoenas and court orders; conducts surveillance of criminal suspects; organize and manage case load. Initiate contact with persons in a position to provide information and/or operational assistance in a matter under investigation and be responsible for controlling the assigned activities of person who have agreed to act as an informant or confidential source.
  • Prepare written statements/ affidavits from suspects victims and witnesses to crimes or relevant matters. Provide written and/or oral communication concerning cases and matters for briefing/ advising other agents supervisors prosecutors and other officials. Draft write and/ or dictate clear concise and comprehensive reports of investigative findings and prepare status reports for investigations. Provide written or oral testimony in state or federal court as to investigative findings.
  • Serve as the point of contact for institutional personnel to request investigations related to criminal and administrative actions. Provides interdiction/ intervention to assist institutions w/ contraband. Ensure that all such intelligence is maintained in the appropriate database.

  • Performs various administrative tasks related to training communications special assignments and other functional areas of responsibility.

  • Performs various support tasks relating to programmatic duties such as uniform crime reporting NCIC auditing executive protection criminal intelligence and/or escapee matters. Performs related duties as required.

  • Take appropriate action to process projects assigned to the unit by the JTTF/ICE/US Marshalls Service/VGTOF/ Crime Stoppers.

  • Maintain liaison with federal state and local law enforcement and judicial agencies. Responds to all incidents and emergences as designated in the SCEMD Preparedness plans whereas SCDC is a participating agency.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State of South CarolinaMinimum Requirements:
A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency. A bachelors degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.



SCDC Minimum Requirements:

(Or an acceptable equivalency as approved by the Division of State Human Resources).

OR

OR

Required certification:
Certification by the law enforcement training council in accordance with 232340 of the code of laws of South Carolina 1976 which requires either current Class I Certification by the SCCJA or Class I Certification by the SCCJA within one (1) year of employment.
