Job Description

THIS IS A NONCIVIL SERVICE POSITION

POSTING DATE: 4/10/2025

SALARY RANGE: $43901.00 $69639.00 ANNUALLY


BACKGROUND CHECK

Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.

PROBATION

All persons including current City employees selected for thisposition must complete a mandatory 6month probation.

SUMMARY OF POSITION

The Maryland Blueprint Career Counselor role will work under the direction of the Mayors Office of Employment Development in partnership with the Baltimore City Public Schools Office of College and Career Readiness.

The Blueprint is a landmark piece of legislation that includes comprehensive changes to Marylands early childhood and public schools. Increasing education funding by $3.8 billion each year over the next 10 years the Blueprint will enrich student experiences accelerate student outcomes and improve the overall quality of education in Maryland.

A key pillar of the Blueprint is to ensure all Maryland students are given the support needed to be college and careerready by the 10th grade and pursue the postsecond pathway most aligned with their skills and interests.

This role is responsible for implementing and delivering Blueprints career advising program to middle and/or high school students through 1:1 and group advising that supports students in identifying exploring experiencing and connecting to their career interests for successful postsecondary placement outcomes.

The Career Coach will work as part of a team with other Career Coaches and schoolbased staff including school counselors postsecondary advisors MOEDs career navigators other schoolbased staff parents/guardians industry partners and crossagency linkages.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Provide career advising that supports students in creating their career journey plans that aide in their selection of one or more postcollege and career readiness pathways
  • Advise and support students including students that are high risk and/or underserved populations in obtaining essential job readiness skills
  • Expose students and families to career options early and often to help them engage in school and to develop their career path
  • Monitor maintain and track student experiences through City Schools workbased learning continuum (such as internships apprenticeships industry certifications etc.)
  • Leverage and communicate resources and connections including employers and programs including and not limited to YouthWorks and Grads2Careers through MOED City Schools and Baltimore City Community College
  • Make appropriate referrals to supportive services and schoolbased staff to meet student needs
  • Keep accurate records and data on students related to their high school and post high school education training and employment outcomes. Compile data for local state and federal reports as necessary
  • Coordinate and/or lead career readiness activities such as mock interview and resume workshops job shadows career days etc.
  • Collaborate with schoolbased teams such as other career coaches school counselors postsecondary advisors MOEDs Career Navigators and other schoolbased staff for student college and career success outcomes
  • Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION: Have a bachelors degree from an accredited university in a relevant field preferred.

AND

EXPERIENCE: Have two years of directly related experience working with young people.

OR

EQUIVALECNY NOTES: Have an equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted as long as it directly relates to the essential duties and responsibilities. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated understanding and/or certification in youth development practices.

Work Environment Requirements:

  • Bilingual preferred; at a minimum the ability to understand and to make oneself understood to all Spanish speaking individuals
  • Ability to travel to and between schools on a frequent basis

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Understanding of youth development and career coaching frameworks
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse racial ethnic socioeconomic and gender backgrounds
  • Strong analytical writing skills and oral communication skills
  • Ability to develop and conduct presentations and training sessions
  • Strong data and project management skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students schoolbased team partners businesses associates and the general public.
  • Knowledge of personal computer with word processing spreadsheet and database applications.
