This is a standard position description to be used for positions with similar duties responsibilities classification and compensation. Employees assigned to the position description may or may not perform all the essential functions indicated in this position description.

Part I: Position Summary:
The Transportation Supervisor is responsible for the overall operations of the mechanics shop and warehouse and the status of the repair and maintenance of all vehicles and equipment used by North Thurston Public Schools. This person will coordinate the work of the department to ensure efficient operations.
The District represents a diverse community with a population of approximately 40% students with diverse backgrounds. The selected candidate must demonstrate a commitment to strengthening community engagement and communication with the Districts diverse populations.
Part II: Supervision and Controls over the Work:
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Transportation. Trade work is performed independently and in conformance with local city county state and federal codes and standards of the profession. Work is reviewed for timeliness completeness safety guidelines and established priorities.
Part III: Major Duties and Responsibilities (depending on specific assignment duties and responsibilities listed may include but not limited to the following):
- Supervises monitors and evaluates mechanics and ensures the efficient and effective operations of school buses and the district motor responsibilities related to training program supervision and dispatch operations.
- Plans sets priority of work and assigns duties to mechanics and coordinates efforts on assigned tasks as needed.
- Assists in the diagnostic and troubleshooting of various mechanical electrical hydraulic and electronic problems that may be experienced. Provides guidance and support to staff as needed.
- Coordinate the ordering of various parts that may be needed. Works directly with vendors in order to obtain the parts and supplies that will provide the best service at the most reasonable cost.
- Supervises and coordinates bus/vehicle state inspections with applicable agencies.
- Responsible for maintaining all service and report records for department vehicles.
- Advises the Transportation Director on the overall condition of the fleet and assists in scheduling the replacement of aging vehicles and equipment that become cost inefficient or unsafe. Assists with the depreciation of School Buses.
- Advises the Director of needed repair and diagnostic equipment needed to properly maintain the fleet.
- Assist the Director in the development of a shop budget as well as adhere to and manage the budget.
- Communicates with personnel from other departments concerning possible maintenance assistance.
- Assures all maintenance and repairs performed are accomplished in a safe manner and follow OSHA guidelines.
- Assures all equipment used for servicing and repairs conforms to ISHA standards.
- Secures maintains and files all vehicle registrations.
- Assists with accident investigations to include the filing of reports and/or claims.
- Assists the Director with the evaluation of road conditions during times of inclement weather.
- Drives routes as needed in emergency situations or when unforeseen staffing issues occur. Must be available for emergency contact during evening and weekend field trips.
- Develop and recommend policies and procedures which implement and maintain the work order system.
- Maintain an inventory control system for parts materials supplies and equipment.
- Responsible for monitoring UST tank levels for fuel waste oil and waste coolant. Order fuel as needed. Schedule waste oil and coolant pickup.
- Responsible for keeping the department compliant with all Washington State Department of Ecology environmental laws.
- Ensure all documentation is up to date and available for UST inspection.
- Communicates regularly with the Director about the needs regulations and procedures for the effective operations of the transportation shop.
- Assists the Director in the collection of fuel and mileage data for STARS state funding allocation report.
- Assists with responding to and processing accident scenes to include coordinating traffic control photographing accident scenes and communicating with law enforcement and emergency personnel.
- Address Transportation Specialists Relief Drivers and Substitutes on issues regarding bus cleanliness bus operating conditions and pre and post trip inspections.
- Collaborate with department administrators and leads to achieve department goals.
- Performs other related duties and special projects as assigned for the success of the department.

- Graduation from high school or equivalent.
- Must have completed an apprenticeship or the equivalent within the specific trade/craft area.
- Must be trained in First Aid. CPR and defibrillator training may be required.
- Ability to recognize and take measures to eliminate safety risk on equipment used to transport students and employees.
- Initiative and ability to work with minimal direction; sound judgment and decisionmaking capabilities are essential.
- Knowledge of federal state and local safety regulations related to assigned trade/craft.
- Must possess a valid Washington State drivers license and a safe driving record and be able and willing to operate district owned vehicles. Must possess or obtain a valid Class B Commercial Drivers License with no air brake restrictions the following endorsements: Passenger School Bus.
- Must pass a preemployment drug and alcohol screen and submit to random drug and alcohol testing.
Part V: Desired Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent. Post high school education/ training preferred.
- Two years supervisory experience in a shop/automotive repair environment that includes hiring and evaluation responsibilities.
- Experience with budgets management and planning.
- Knowledge and proficient use of computers and software related to running a vehicle maintenance shop and. i.e. fuel software and basic office software.
- At least five (5) years of experience performing preventive maintenance and repair on diesel and gasoline engines.
- Knowledge and experience working and maintaining air and hydraulic brake systems.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions and ability to train others in complying with them.
- Ability to perform a variety of tasks simultaneously.
- Ability to create and maintain accurate timely and complete records.
- Must successfully obtain a Washington State UST class A/B operator Certificate within 60 days of employment.
- Bilingual skills.

Employee is required to properly use such safety equipment as is appropriate to the work to prevent injury to self or others.
