Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:

The Day Camp Leader will assist the Day Camp Coordinator in all areas of operating the day camp program. They will encourage support respect and demonstrate a positive caring energetic attitude towards all who attend the day camps and other staff members.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Program

  • Create and implement a 4week day camp program for children aged 611 with an administrative team.

  • Works with the Day Camp Coordinator and Day Camp Counsellors in planning and implementing camp.

  • Responsible for the day camp logistics and lead various camp activities including (but not limited to) music sports recreational games crafts and other scheduled events.

  • Responsible for ensuring effective training support and supervision of Day Camp Counsellors.

  • Clearly communicate directions for program activities.

  • Document process and reports as needed and recommendations to resolve issues and problems.

  • Develop relationships with children using empathy and active listening to encourage happy and welldeveloped children and youth.

  • Role models appropriate behaviors and attitudes.

General Accountabilities

  • Ensure that Day Camp area is tidy in relation to appearance condition and safety as recommendedby Public Health etc.

  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned i.e. setup and camp cleanup.

  • Ensure the highest standard of health and safety for all campers volunteers and staff.

  • Assist with ensuring the emotional wellness and personal development of campers.

  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Armys health and

  • safety policies and procedures.

  • Support campers to develop socially mentally and spiritually.

  • Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the

  • safety and confidentiality of participants and information.

  • Act in cases of urgency or emergency in alignment with camp policies and procedures.

Perform other related duties as required.

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Governance Boards and Councils: None

Internal:

  • Reports directly to the Day Camp Coordinator

  • Attend all staff training/orientation and meetings.

External:

  • Community campers and family members.

MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY:

  • Reports directly to the Camp Coordinator.

  • Provide supervision for the Day Camp Counsellors.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • Authorized to spend disburse or collect small amounts of cash.

  • Assist Children & Youth Coordinator and Camp Coordinator in maintaining camp supplies for the program.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary position based 35 hours per week.

  • Working environment is in a day camp setting both indoor and outdoor in generally agreeable conditions with the following exceptions exposure to tantrums and noise.

  • This job requires the ability to lift/move 25 lbs.

  • This job requires reaching bending and stooping frequently working in a standing position for long periods of time and use a computer.

  • Flexibility in scheduling is required.

Normal hours of work: the hours of work and work schedule will be set by the supervisor as per operational requirements Monday to Friday 8:15 a.m. to 3:15p.m. and includes a hour paid meal break.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Submit as required a Police Record Check (vulnerable sector check) that is acceptable to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion.

    • This position is funded in part through the CanadaSummer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:

  • aged 15 to 30 years at the beginning of the employment period;

  • be a Canadian citizen permanent resident or person to whom refugee protection hasbeen conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment*; and

  • holds a valid Social Insurance Number;and

  • be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

  • *International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone whois temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen permanent resident orperson who has been granted refugee status in Canada.

  • An ongoing condition of employment is the ability to maintain immigration status to legallyremain and work in Canada which is supported by valid immigration documents.

  • The above responsibilities must be performed in keeping with The Salvation Armys Mission Vision andValues in a professional manner upholding our code of conduct.

education and experience Qualifications:

Education Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completed a minimum of grade eleven (11).

  • A current valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificate or willingness to obtain would be an asset.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • Minimum of one (1) year prior experience in a day camp setting working with children.

  • Must have excellent written verbal and computer skills (this includes but not limited to video editing)

  • Have own computer with reliable internet connection as file access and meetings may take place online.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Strong leadership planning and organizational skills with the ability to adapt to change.

  • Ability to learn quickly and use initiative.

  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.

  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and the ability to exercise good judgement.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively patiently and effectively.

  • Able to help support other camp staff with childrens individual behavioral needs.

  • A desire to be creative and innovative showing initiative with limited supervision.

  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member.

  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies procedures and associated legislation.

  • Undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army in its sole discretion (i.e. The Salvation Army Abuse Registry etc.).

  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $17.20 to $20.01 with a maximum of $24.01.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions internal equity and candidate experience skills and qualifications relevant to the role.
