About the Department of Animal Science

The Department of Animal Science offers undergraduate and graduate programs on the biology and management of food laboratory and companion animal species. Our research programs advance our understanding of animal biology and address local and global issues facing animal industries today. Our goals are to discover and develop new techniques and information to benefit animals agriculture and human health. Our internationally recognized faculty have diverse interests in animal management breeding genetics physiology nutrition growth biology and microbiology.

The Opportunity

Join our team as the Undergraduate Program and Advising Coordinator (UPAC) and play a key role in supporting undergraduate majors and prospective students in the Department of Animal Science.

This position plays a vital part in program planning and development coordination and advising. Your mission To build and sustain a vibrant thriving student community while providing exceptional academic support to both incoming and current students in their chosen major. Key Responsibilities:

  • Advise undergraduate students on academic requirements career pathways study abroad programs and internship opportunities.

  • Assist students considering a change of major and provide faculty with mentoring best practices..

  • Develop career planning resources and collaborate with CALS Student Services to connect students with job and internship opportunities.

  • Maintain an uptodate database of advisees and track student progress.

  • Work with the Director of Undergraduate Studies to coordinate the Animal Science major including faculty advisor assignments and curriculum planning.

  • Manage the program budget and oversee event planning workshops and recruitment efforts.

  • Organize new student orientation coordinate course schedules and ensure accurate grade submissions and course evaluations.

This is a fulltime (39 hours/week) Contract College position that is based in Ithaca NY. This position follows a 4:1 campustohome hybrid work arrangement after a period of orientation and training. This hybrid work arrangement is subject to change at any time. Typical work hours are 8am4:30pm Monday through Friday.

What You Need

We are seeking a team member who is organized adaptable and detail oriented. Additionally you will:

  • Hold an Associates degree and 4 to 6 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.

  • Ability to advocate for individuals from a broad range of backgrounds.

  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students faculty staff and community members

  • Display strong customer service skills.

  • Have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Proven experience prioritizing multiple projects.

  • Have strong analytical and problemsolving skills.

  • Utilize initiative and accuracy in providing information.

  • Be flexible and open to new ideas.

  • Have experience with independent program coordination and activity management.

  • Be experienced at providing effective academic guidance for students.

  • Have the ability to work under general supervision.

  • Have excellent oral and written communication skills.

  • Utilize sound judgment innovation and creativity.

  • Utilize discretion and integrity in handling confidential information.

  • Display the ability to work independently and collaboratively.

  • Display the ability to work well with diverse groups including faculty staff and students.

  • Utilize ethical judgment when representing the University.

If you possess these experiences and skills this may be the role for you! There are a few other qualifications we would view as incredibly helpful in this role to include:

  • Bachelors degree in a related field or previous experience working in an academic setting.

  • Experience advising and providing guidance to students and prospective students on two or more of the following: academic requirements career interests extracurricular opportunities study abroad or internship opportunities.

  • Knowledge of undergraduate policies and procedures including knowledge of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

  • Expertise with Cornell student procedures and business systems including Bursar online system (processing online awards and requesting item types) Workday and PeopleSoft student tracking and grading systems.
