DescriptionProperly identifies patient draws blood samples and sends to laboratory for analysis. The Phlebotomist 2 maintains records of tests performed and blood samples taken and may perform waived or moderate complex tests in laboratory setting. Also the Phlebotomist 2 may assist in the supervision and training of lowerlevel Phlebotomists.
Responsibilities- Productivity
- Performs an acceptable productivity level without a significant error rate. Identifies patients collects samples and labels specimens according to established protocol in order to provide optimal sample quality for laboratory analysis.
- Coordinates plans and utilizes time efficiently in an effort to prioritize and organize duties while remaining flexible to meet the needs of the laboratory service customers. Maintains an inventory of supplies in work areas and requests and orders supplies as necessary to ensure efficient departmental operations and avoid duplication of energy and services whenever possible.
- Demonstrates initiative in adapting to changes or unusual circumstances especially those not covered by written or verbal instructions in a way that promotes cooperation and minimizes disruption to the working environment.
- Performs an acceptable productivity level without a significant error rate on a variety of waived or moderate complex procedures.
- Quality
- Quality is paramount in all aspects of daily functions and work processes to include routine blood collection bedside testing and selected culture collection as necessary in compliance with established policies and procedures in an effort toward ensuring high patient care standards.
- May schedule and assign work to staff members monitor work quality and quantity and ensure efficient departmental operations by providing supervisory support when needed.
- Combines ethical judgment with technical skill within the policy and legal guidelines of the hospital and laboratory in decision making processes and in the performance of procedures. Uses professional discretion with patient information and maintains confidentiality of patient records.
- Observes and adheres to all departmental and hospital policies and procedures and follows all safety quality assurance and infection control standards.
- Consistently exhibits a professional manner appearance and performance in the approach to job related duties in an effort to maintain high standards in the delivery of quality health care services.
- Possesses a keen knowledge of job responsibilities with an ongoing effort of continuing education to ensure high quality health care utilizing understanding and respect. That knowledge is also structured to avoid waste through the conservation of all valuable hospital materials in a prudent and efficient manner.
- Follows standardized procedures and practices in the performance of all types of specimen collection and handling to preserve specimen integrity and validity . If licensed MLA follows standardized procedures in the performance of waived or moderate complex testing helps prepare samples for testing and analyzes test results for accuracy acceptability and critical limits.

- May provide quality training and orientation for assigned employees informs coworkers of relevant departmental policies and procedures and allocates tasks to coworkers as needed. Treats all coworkers with compassion understanding and respect and strives to enhance coworker performance through cooperative effort and action.
- Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with patients physicians pathologists staff and other individuals.

QualificationsExperience Education Training Special Skills and Licensure :
- One year in phlebotomy with demonstrated proficiency in all age groups
- High School or equivalent
- May require Louisiana License as Medical Lab Assistant by LSBME within 6 months of employment if performing waived or moderate complex testing duties
