Description and Functions
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking an Assistant Wildlife Veterinarian located at the Thorne/Williams Wildlife Research Center (TWRC) in Sybille Canyon. This position oversees and supervises all aspects of the daily operation of the TWRC including captive wildlife care maintenance and upkeep of animal enclosures holding facilities buildings fences and grounds located on approximately 400 acres of land. This position provides leadership and supervision to TWRC personnel and assists in providing professional veterinary expertise advice and services to the Department. Residence in the Departmentprovided housing at the TWRC is a condition of employment as are weekend and holiday rotation which are shared with other employees of the facility. This position is required to respond to afterhours emergencies and other work requirements including weekends holidays late evenings and early mornings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed in the job level.- Provide preventive and emergency veterinary care of captive research animals and other wildlife as required
- Oversee all aspects of the research facility operations and maintenance
- Supervise lead and evaluate TWRC personnel
- Design collaborate conduct and supervise captive wildlife research
- Assist with budget preparation and tracking
- Procure supplies and equipment manage contracts and communicate with vendors
- Procure and maintain controlled and noncontrolled substances for use in captive wildlife
- Maintain TWRCs good standing as a registered Research Facility under the USDA APHIS Animal Welfare Act
- Provide prescriptions for medications supplies and Veterinary Feed Directives for use by field personnel
- Provide informational presentations for agency personnel and the general public
- Conduct necropsies interpret diagnostic reports and maintain medical records
- Participate in Departmentassigned species working groups teams and committees
- Assist in statewide wildlife captures and fieldwork as assigned
Qualifications
PREFERENCES/**AGENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Preference will be given to those with experience in large/mixed animal veterinary medicine.
Preference will be given to those with experience inlarge/mixed/wildlife animal handling techniques.
Preference will be given to those with experience in animal research facilities and facility maintenance.
**Statewide and limited national/international travel required
KNOWLEDGE:- Knowledge of: Anatomy bacteriology biology diagnostics epidemiology foreign and domestic animal diseases immunology mammalogy medicine nutrition physiology parasitology pharmacology pathology statistics surgery toxicology and virology.
- Skilled in disease diagnoses animal handling and sampling animal capture animal clinical care surgery necropsies and diagnostic equipment.
- Knowledge of animal husbandry techniques
- Ability to handle dangerous animals safely safely and effectively capture wild animals.
- Ability to communicate complex scientific findings to diverse audiences and publish research results in scientific journals.
- Skilled in time management particularly with multitasking complex projects; ability to prioritize and adapt to various work demands
- Knowledge of organizational planning and leadership supervision and management of employees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education:Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM)Experience:24years of progressive work experience (typically in Veterinary Medicine or wildlife biology) with acquired knowledge at the level of a VeterinarianCertificates Licenses Registrations:Must have or be eligible to obtain a Wyoming Board of Veterinary Medicine license Wyoming Controlled Substance Registration Federal (USDJ/DEA) Controlled Substance Registration and Federal (USDA/APHIS) accreditation.
Must have a valid drivers licenseNecessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:- Physically able to perform a variety of field activities including animal capture and transport
- Physically able to regularly lift heavy objects in excess of 50 lbs and perform various strenuous physical activities during certain jobs.
- Ability to safely operate motorized equipment including 4x4 pickup truck ATVs and UTVs in various travel and environmental conditions and be able to manage and tow a variety of trailers.
- Ability to safely utilize heavy equipment such as farm tractors and skid steers and small hand tools.
- Ability to work in various weather and environmental conditions during all hours of the day including late evenings and early mornings.
NOTES:
- FLSA: Exempt
- The incumbent for this position is required to reside in Department housing located at the ThorneWilliams Wildlife Research Center which is 35 miles from Laramie and Wheatland Wyoming.
