SUMMARY

This position is part of the Storm Water Services Strategic Planning and Operations Division and is primarily responsible for assisting with inspection and cleaning of inlets through the Storm Water Inlet Inspection Program to ensure compliance with the NPDES permit.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs manual and semiskilled labor tasks related to the inspection general assessment and cleaning of the storm inlet system within City maintained roadways.
  • Performs simple measurements and inspection of drainage structures to confirm GIS inventory data.
  • Transports materials tools and equipment to and from job sites.
  • Operates small hand tools power tools and cleaning equipment.
  • Based on a checklist maintains vehicles and equipment in clean good operating condition.
  • Maintains truck inventory; maintains clean and safe work area.
  • Maintain hardware and field equipment.
  • Provide support to internal and external customers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities:

Working Knowledge:

  • Knowledge and use of proper safety practices and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Knowledge and proper use of hand signals for equipment operations gas monitoring equipment personnel computer basic computer software and communications equipment.
  • Experience in determining pipe sizes and material basic function of gravity storm drainage systems and training in confined space entry.
  • A valid drivers license a good driving record with the ability to obtain and maintain a City Driving Permit.

Ability To:

  • Read and write understand and follow oral and written instructions read and interpret maps drive and work safely.
  • Perform work requiring physical strength work in confined spaces operate small equipment while in adherence to all City and departmental health and safety procedures.
  • Work in a team atmosphere be a selfstarter try new ideas and maintain flexibility communicate effectively deal with and resolve conflict within a team be courteous under pressure establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and the public.

Skill in:

  • Use and care of basic hand/power tools the use of brush removal equipment and driving light trucks/small offroad equipment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two (2) years of underground utility construction experience.
  • Work order system experience.
  • Storm water infrastructure maintenance and construction of roadways.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent such as a GED.

Other Requirements:

This position requires that the selected candidate be able to walk at least 3 miles per day stand for at least 8 hours per day remove and replace manhole lids and inlet grates weighing up to 250 pounds lift push and pull up to 125 pounds multiple times a day climb a ladder bend crawl and stoop crawl through pipes and culverts as small as 48 inches traverse and climb difficult Piedmont terrain and waterways in an urban environment perform work under adverse weather and environmental conditions. Employee must be able to work occasional oncall emergency work overtime or varying shift hours may be required. Employee must obtain and maintain trainings and certifications essential to the work assignment as directed.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidates written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a preemployment drugscreening test and physical examination. During the selection process candidates may be asked to take a skills test and/or participate in other assessments.
