Rites of Passage Scaabe Competition

Category: FullTime Permanent

Position Summary

Under the direction and supervision of the Director of Children and Families the Rights of Passage Scaabe will work directly with First Nations youth in care youth who have aged out of care and youth who are at risk of involvement with the Manitoba Child and Family Services (CFS) system. The Rights of Passage Scaabe will assist First Nations youth by offering individual supports and workshops that aid in the development of skills necessary for youth to transition into independent living and to ensure that youth have opportunities to fulfill and maintain their mental physical emotional and spiritual wellbeing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Liaise with First Nation CFS Agencies organizations and schools promote services available to First Nations children and youth through the First Nations Family Advocate Office and Rites of Passage stream of service and to establish a process for referrals.
  • Establish working relationships with collaterals and parents/caregivers to ensure that needs are met and that youth have support with short and long term planning.
  • Participate in a weekly case conference.
  • Work with youth to complete the intake process and develop a Brave Path.
  • Establish a rapport with youth and families through regular contact and maintaining healthy boundaries.
  • Develop and facilitate workshops that are designed to meet the needs of participants create opportunities for healing cultural awareness life skills and employment skills.
  • Assist youth in seeking resources in housing education employment training treatment etc..
  • Work with the Mino Bimaadiziwin Grandmother and Grandfather to provide culturally appropriate supports and services.
  • Work closely with the Advocacy Coordinator to address any issues or concerns as it relates to client files;
  • Provide a voice for children and youth by advocating on common issues and challenges they encounter; and
  • Provide added support to youth involved in the Justice System by attending court proceedings and liaising with crown counsel and lawyers.
  • Maintain uptodate records of client files/case notes and provide monthly reports to supervisor.

Qualifications: Education & Experience

  • Certificate from a recognized postsecondary institution. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of the Child and Family Services system policies laws and regulations standards and recent legal and regulatory developments is desired.
  • Experience working with and in First Nations.
  • Knowledge of First Nation issues related to the child welfare justice education and healthcare systems.
  • Excellent verbal written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Experience in both the development and implementation of workshops.
  • Demonstrate problem solving and criticalthinking skills.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office software Word Excel and Outlook.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Knowledge of management organizational and planning principles.
  • Be able to follow office procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of First Nations people and Nations.
  • Able to work flexible hours and travel upon request.
