Job Description

Position: PartTime Firefighter/AEMT or Firefighter/Paramedic

Department: Fire Department

Hiring Pay: $16.00

Wage Range: AEMT/Paramedic $20.00 $30.00

Status: PartTime NonExempt

POSITION SUMMARY

Performs a variety of Firefighting/AEMT or Firefighter/Paramedic duties related to protecting the life and property of city residents.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the close supervision of the shift supervisor station supervisor or designated shift supervisor. Promotes and follows the Citys mission statement values and expectations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The duties and responsibilities described are not a comprehensive list. Additional tasks may be assigned as needed.

50% FIREFIGHTER

  • Receives classroom and field training in a wide range of fire prevention and suppression techniques principles and procedures; receives specialized training in salvage and rescue operations emergency medical aid emergency preparedness hazardous materials disaster drowning and other related emergency situations.
  • Responds to emergency signals; performs as a member of firefighting team; responds to emergency calls by riding fire apparatus to scene of fire; lays and connects water hose hooks up pump holds nozzle and directs water stream; raises and climbs ladders; utilizes other specialized equipment such as fire extinguishers SCBAs encapsulated HazMat suits power saws and hydraulic rescue tool; rescues occupants from fire danger renders emergency medical aid removes bodies and performs salvage operations.
  • Receives instruction on policies and procedures to conduct preincident inspections on various types of facilities; conducts inspections and advises residents or owners of necessary actions to conform to standards.
  • Prepares and submits a variety of reports related to fire incidents and prefire plan activity; performs general maintenance necessary to maintain department building and equipment; sweeps and cleans station rooms makes beds washes walls floors and widows.
  • Performs various maintenance tasks such as painting servicing equipment cleaning polishing testing and repairing firefighting apparatus; services maintains and repairs fire trucks; maintains breathing apparatus and other safety equipment.
  • Completes and passes a yearly work capacity test consisting of an arduous pack test consisting of a 3mile walk wearing 45 pounds in less than 45 minutes and completes Department Job Task Simulation.

50% AEMT/Paramedic

  • Evaluates patients condition and/or injuries; evaluates accident scenes and/or medical emergencies and administers aid as per protocol; monitors patients vital signs and provides basic life support until transported to the Operates resuscitation and suction devices during cardiopulmonary resuscitation; applies vacuum splints cervical collars backboards and various other medical devices used to immobilize patients during transport and extrication.
  • Performs daily inventory of ambulances and ensures their readiness to respond to emergencies. Checks all equipment on board the ambulance and ensures it is operating properly.
  • Applies bandages and dressing on soft tissue injuries as needed to stop bleeding; applies pneumatic antishock pants on patients as per protocol to maintain profusion of patients vital signs; lifts and carries patients from scene to ambulance according to established procedures. Transports patients via ambulance to hospitals.
  • Cleans ambulances and equipment in a safe manner to prevent exposure to medical waste and other hazards associated with medical operations. Disposes of contaminated equipment and material according to governing regulations.
  • Attends public gatherings to ensure observance of fire safety requirements standards and regulations; conducts tours for interested groups.
  • Performs other related duties as required by the Chief.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

Graduation from high school and

Utah State Certified Advanced EMT or Paramedic and

Utah State Certified Firefighter I & II and

Utah State Certified Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of firefighting methods techniques and procedures; firefighting equipment types and varieties and their most appropriate and effective use; equipment maintenance and care; state and city codes laws and regulations and ordinances related to fire prevention; fire vehicle equipment; emergency medical techniques procedures and firstaid; interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to follow detailed verbal or written work instructions; work in dangerous emergency situations; perform strenuous physical labor; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; assimilate modern fire prevention and firefighting skills; perform under extreme weather conditions; work on call and on shift work; develop effective working relationships with supervisors fellow employees and the public.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a valid State of Utah drivers license or obtain one prior to employment and be deemed insurable to operate city equipment and vehicles.
  • PALS/ALS within 12 months of hire.
  • Must be Wildland Firefighter 1 (NWCG FFT2) within 12 months of hire.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Must pass NFPA 1582 medical and physical requirements.
  • Must be able to drive and operate all types of fire and EMS apparatus.
  • Able to work up to 1508 hours per year.

Must regularly lift and or move equipment and/or persons weighing 150 pounds or more. Specific vision ability required by this job included close vision color vision and the ability to adjust focus. Various levels of mental application required i.e. memory for details emotional stability discriminating thinking creative problem solving and guided problemsolving. Continuous use of motor skills. Many functions of the work pose high degree of hazard uncertainty and hazardous materials. Physical readiness and conditioning may be a condition of job retention.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Functions of the position generally performed in a controlled environment but subject to all seasonal and weather extremes and exposure to extremely hazardous conditions and materials. Emergency response travel expected in normal course of performing duties.
