You will be updated with latest job alerts via emailThe primary function of the Office of State Fire Marshal Fire Plans Examiner is the review and approval of plans for life and fire issues ensuring compliance with applicable codes and standards for fire and life safety. Perform permit and life safety inspections based upon the needs of the office. Provide technical assistance to customers as it relates to the function of the OSFM; design and operation of facilities in compliance with the States Fire Code.
This position may offer the ability to work remotely within Arizona based upon the departments business needs and continual meeting of expected performance measures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Review and approval of submitted plans to the OSFM for life and fire issues including interior finish occupancy type height and area limitations construction type and general fire safety and the identification of the requirements for fire protection systems and permits in accordance with IFC 2018 and referenced standards for fire and life safety.
Prepare reports and correspondence that reflect the findings of plan reviews in accordance with applicable codes standards policies and procedures of the Arizona Office of State Fire Marshal.
Assist in serving as the OSFM point of contact for all Exhibition/Trade Shows and Sporting Facilities under the OSFMs jurisdiction for scheduling of periodic inspections billing for services and management of special events calendar for staffing needs.
As needed perform permit and life safety inspections where specific technical knowledge and skill are beyond that of the Deputy Fire Marshal Inspector.
Meet with customers in order to provide technical assistance related to the function of the Office of State Fire Marshal and to discuss and review design installation performance and operation of facilities to ensure compliance with the States Fire Code.
Drive on State business

Knowledge of:
IFC 2018 as currently adopted.
The applicable building code as related to IFC 2018 as currently adopted.
NFPA Guidelines for the installation of Fire Protection Systems; Fire Alarm Fire Sprinkler Kitchen Suppression etc.
Fire protection engineering relating to hydraulics and fire detection systems hydraulics as applied to sprinkler systems and fire prevention.
Field inspection procedures and techniques.
Computer applications for fire plans review.
Skills in:
Read and interpret building plans and specifications.
Detailed code research
Analytical and report preparation.
Interpersonal.
Records maintenance.
Calculating figures and amounts such as proportions percentages areas and circumferences; basic math algebra and geometry.
The use office equipment/computer software etc.
Ability to:
Establish and maintain relationships with engineers contractors architects and the general public.
Interpret and apply federal state and local laws codes and ordinances.
Communicate effectively both verbally and written.
Explain code requirements and plans review procedures to persons with various backgrounds while remaining positive and professional.
Apply effective problem resolution measures with diverse groups.
Work independently performing tasks involving numerous details concentration and high level of accuracy in completing analysis and interpretation of technical construction documents.
Drive on State business.
Fire Inspector II or equivalent National Fire Academy Fire and Life Safety Plans Examiner or equivalent Bachelors Degree from accredited college/university related to fire science/administration five years experience as Fire Inspector or Fire Plans Reviewer or two years experience as Fire Plans Reviewer.
Fire Plans Examiner Certification meeting minimum JPRs NFPA 1031
A valid Arizona Drivers License.
Any employee operating a motor vehicle on State business must possess and retain a current valid classappropriate drivers license complete all required training and successfully pass all necessary drivers license record checks. The license must be current unexpired and neither revoked nor suspended. Employees who drive on state business are subject to drivers license record checks must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete all required driver training. An employee who operates a personally owned vehicle on state business shall maintain the statutorily required liability insurance (see Arizona Administrative Code (A.A.C.) R210207.11).

Positions in this classification participate in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS).
Participation is a mandatory condition of employment for all employees who meet the eligibility and membership criteria as defined in statute.
Enrollment eligibility will become effective after 27 weeks of employment.
The current contribution rate is 12.29%
