Essential Functions:

The Director of Human Resources and Safe Environment:

Position Responsibilities:

1. Directs the recruitment onboarding employee relations benefits administration and offboarding for the diocesan employees at the Pastoral Center (PC) and the Des Moines Region Schools Office (Region) and consults with the other locations to provide knowledge and tools for the process.

  • Updates the job description with the hiring manager
  • Facilitates the recruiting process
  • Coordinates interview & screening of candidates
  • Executes employment offer
  • Coordinates onboarding process


2. Team Supervision and Development

  • Leads mentors and supports HR team in daily operations and longterm growth.
  • Allocates responsibilities and set goals to improve team effectiveness.
  • Promotes a collaborative and serviceoriented work environment.


3. Manages Performance Management & Training

  • Manages the training and execution of the performance management process for the PC & Region
  • Coordinates training and professional development programs
  • Addresses employee concerns and resolve conflicts in a fair and timely manner.
  • Leads initiatives to improve workplace culture and employee satisfaction.

4. Manages the development implementation and compliance of HR policies for the Diocese.

  • Works with outside legal counsel and sources to monitor laws to ensure our diocesan policies are in compliance.
  • Maintains the HR policies for PC and a template for other locations
  • Manages the HR policies with the HR committee for the Region
  • Provides counsel for employee issues and advises on all employee terminations for all locations in the Diocese.


5. Compensation and Benefits Administration

  • Leads the compensation committee for the PC & Region
  • Ensures job descriptions are properly classified and salary schedules are at the market for the PC & Region
  • Assists locations in the training and use of the Just Practices of Compensation tool
  • Leads the Diocese Benefits committee
  • Works with the insurance broker on the annual renewal of the diocesan benefit plans
  • Assists with the management of the workers compensation program
  • Assists with the management of the retirement plan
  • Oversee (Region) payrollrelated HR inputs and collaborate with the accounting to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Maintain and manage HR information systems (HRIS) and employee data integrity.


6. Manages the Safe Environment Process

  • Ensure employees and volunteers are provided with proper training
  • Monitors compliance with policies and procedures
  • Manages the background screening process


Essential Relationships:

  • Chief Administrative and Financial Officer for the Diocese
  • Chief Operating Officer for the Des Moines Region Catholic Schools
  • Staff of the Administrative Finance & Region offices
  • Bishop & Diocesan Leadership
  • Leadership of Parishes and Schools
Requirements

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree and 7 years of experience in the field of HR


Other/Preferred Skills:

SHRMCP/SHRMSCP or PHR/SPHR certification preferred.
