The Sales Tax Office within the Treasury Division is hiring anAccounting Technician I tojoin our team.

The Sales Tax Office assists merchants of all sizes in understanding and following the Sales Tax Code and provides general information and assistance to the public.

The Sales Tax team is looking for an enthusiastic accountingminded individual with a strong attention to detail and focus on excellent customer service. A successful applicant can demonstrate effective communication across a variety of platforms including inperson interactions email and formal written communications with a diverse audience. Dependability in being present at the workplace during business hours. The ability to produce a high volume of data entry accurately is critical. Last but not least we are looking for an adaptable mindset that is open to technology and modernization of our business process.

The 3member Sales Tax Office within the 17member Treasury Division is a tightknit team that works together to ensure timely and accurate collection of Sales Taxes within the borough. You will find the work complex and diverse with frequent interruptions and public interactions all while providing excellent customer service. You will be constantly assessing and prioritizing your tasks and workload within the Sales Tax Office to ensure that revenues are accurately and expediently posted. The Treasury Division is a dynamic and evolving environment that will require your innovative thinking willingness to adapt quickly and a flexible mindset. WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION
This position works (Monday through Friday) 8:00am 4:30pm. Your office would be located in downtown Juneau on the first floor of City Hall.

Typical Responsibilities

Holding a key position in the Sales Tax Office you will be working with the Sales Tax Compliance Accountants Revenue Officer and other Treasury staff to help our local merchants register and file their CBJ sales taxes. You will be processing confidential tax documents related to the reporting and remitting of general sales hotel/motel tobacco alcohol and marijuana selfreported taxes and verifying payments posted correctly.


You will be interacting regularly with merchants and the public in a variety of formats formal and informal. You will support local merchants by responding to basic tax inquiries and providing guidance on completing sales tax returns and other related forms. You will use your technical and analytical skills to accurately key sales tax returns and identify merchant errors on selfreported tax filings.


Examples of specific duties include:

  • Provide excellent customer service in interacting with members of the public in person over the phone and by email responding to questions and concerns.
  • Process sales tax returns and analyze accounts before generating monthly billings.
  • Process new business registrations and coordinate the quarterly mailing to unregistered businesses.
  • Issue Senior Sales Tax Exemption cards Resale cards and Nonprofit Exemption cards.
  • Maintain merchant accounts and files.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or the equivalent.

Experience:

Six (6) months of any combination of jobrelated postsecondary education and clerical or customer service experience in a jobrelated area.

Postsecondary Credit: Courses will be credited based on 3 semester/4 quarter hours 1 month of experience.

Applicant must document how relevant education and experience meets the above minimum qualification.

*Transcripts that indicate the credit hours earned for the specific course work will need to be included with the CBJ application.
