Job Description

The American Chemical Society (ACS) is the worlds largest scientific membership association and one of the top five scholarly publishers in the Publications Division of the ACS provides to its members and the worldwide scientific community a comprehensive collection of highquality information products and services for the practice and advancement of the chemical sciences. The Division publishes 80 highquality peerreviewed journals that cover the breadth of chemistry and allied fields as well as a weekly magazine peer reviewed digital books and reference works (ACS Reagents ACS Guide to Scholarly Communications).

Within the ACS Publications Division the Global Editorial Operations (GEO) team performs four main functions:

  • Editorial Services charged with overseeing the editorial operations for 900 offices developing and implementing policies and strategies to ensure that high quality peer review continues to be a cornerstone of ACS Publications at scale.
  • Researcher Products & Engagement charged with overseeing author reviewer and editor products including ChemRxiv ACSs Author and Reviewer Labs the ACS Publishing Center Editor Hub revenue generating Supplementary Covers and our suite of forfee authoring services. The team is charged with developing products and services to support editorial stakeholders including all editors within the ACS journals portfolio and partner journals.
  • Publishing Integrity Office charged with overseeing publications ethics within the ACS portfolio advancing Diversity Equity Inclusion and Respect (DEIR) practices and the development and management of data validation and standards.
  • ACS eBooks & eReferences charged with publishing digital books and references which include ACS In Focus (digital learning primers) ACS eBooks (edited works on a focus topic) ACS Guide to Scholarly Communication (the definitive source for scholarly writing) and ACS Reagents (highpurity standards.)

Position Summary & Accountabilities

Reporting to the Manager Publishing Integrity Office the Publication Data and Ethics Manager will divide time between publication ethics case management and data analysis support. Ethics case management requires providing guidance and best practice information to internal stakeholders such as journal Editors and ACS staff. Data analysis support includes the development and enforcement of data policies and standards across ACS journal portfolio including data validation data deposition requirements and data availability statements as well as data initiatives projectbased work.

This role is based in our Washington D.C. A reasonable rate of compensation for this position is between $8200$111000 per year.

Core job responsibilities include:

  • Assist with and provide vendor support for ethics case management.
  • Develop and provide documentation and resources to support editorial teams handling of ethics cases.
  • Help to monitor and develop tools to better identify and address unethical behavior within the publishing process.
  • Assist with training and monitoring of vendor staff that perform data analysis checks for ACS journals during the peer review process and update training documentation.
  • Respond to editor reviewer and author queries received through the Publishing Integrity Office Publication Ethics queue or ACS Data Help Desk.
  • Recommend and implement data requirements for journals and update Author Guidelines and the ACS Publishing Center as needed.

Required Skills:

  • Advanced Degree (M.S.) preferably in chemistry or equivalent work experience.
  • Knowledge of organic compound nomenclature; Knowledge of basic crystallography or computational chemistry is a plus.
  • Familiarity with ACS Style Guide standards of chemical technical writing; familiarity with chromatographic spectroscopic and other standard methods used for isolating and characterizing organic compounds.
  • Competence with databases email Microsoft Office SciFinder and Webbased applications; familiarity with editing PDF files using Adobe Acrobat Pro.
  • Ability to interact expediently and diplomatically with an international customer base of authors and reviewers; some knowledge of scientific peer review would be preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability of project management and strategic thinking.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to travel for planned meetings and events up to 10% of time: may include both domestic and international travel requirements.
