Job Description

POSITION: Certified ESA Elementary Level School Counselor 1.0 FTE

LOCATION: Mount StuartElementary School

REPORTS TO: Building Principal

Purpose

  • Assisting students in establishing and attaining personal social and educational goals which are acceptable and attainable and providing assistance in developing plans for achieving these goals.
  • Help lead implement and support the MTSS framework both academically and behaviorally.

Responsibilities

  • Guide Proactive groups that may include SEL skills on the playground
  • May help guide Playworks Junior Coach Model for 4th and 5th grade students
  • Can collaborate with team to design and implement school wide character education including monthly assemblies.
  • Participating in providing intervention support services in a team approach for student staff and parents.
  • Teaching skills in the classroom or other group settings concerning coping social norms physical and emotional survival mediation multicultural awareness and problem solving.
  • Assisting the principal in identifying and resolving student issues and disciplinary problems.
  • Providing counseling to students who have disciplinary and/or attendance problems.
  • Providing assistance with meeting the needs of special education students and those with 504 plans.
  • Participating in multidisciplinary assessments for areas such as academic intellectual learning styles behavioral and social/emotional/health needs.
  • Providing staff and parent training in areas such as intervention techniques learning types behavior management instructional approaches attention deficits atrisk characteristics drugaffected children child development and parenting skills.
  • Providing crisis intervention and management support to students staff and parents.
  • Providing effective evaluation of student needs and coordinating referrals for services to the appropriate specialist or community agencies.
  • Consulting and collaborating with parents school staff and outside agency personnel regarding mental health behavioral social/emotional and educational concerns and their implications and effective means of intervention and making home visits as needed.
  • Evaluating and interpreting student records and ensuring that they are maintained per state and federal regulations.
  • Developing and maintaining professional competency through inservice education coursework or professional growth activities.
  • Serving on staff committees as required or as assigned by the principal.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters in an ethical manner.
  • Demonstrated knowledge understanding and acceptance of the various recommended components of a complete counseling program as prescribed by the ASCA Model of Counseling.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships and interact successfully with all school district staff and students.
  • Demonstrated understanding of developmental stages and needs of elementary level students.
  • Demonstrated ability and desire to work effectively with student groups of varying sizes staff and parents.
  • Demonstrated ability and desire to work with colleagues in the development and facilitation of prevention programs as well as programs to promote academic success.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently take initiative and accept the responsibility of providing effective leadership in a fastpaced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve and provide logical solutions in complex situations.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated high level of computer proficiency and application of technology.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce and maintain accurate records.
  • Demonstrated ability to remain flexible to change in assignment or situations.
  • Bilingual skills preferred

Educational/Vocational Preparation Occupational Certificates/Licenses

  • Washington State teaching certificate appropriate to assignment. Endorsements

Special certification and/or license required for specific assignment.

  • Must qualify to work in the proximity of children under the conditions of a WSP/FBI background check

Preferred Education and Experience

  • Second language or language acquisition background or abilities preferred
  • Student cultural and economic diversity experience preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish/English preferred
