Atrium School seeks a Spanish Teacher (three days a week) for PreK Grade 8. The Atrium Spanish program helps children develop basic communicative competence in Spanish instills confidence and pride in students as Spanish speakers creates a Spanish learning culture that is joyful and exciting and develops students understanding and appreciation of Spanishspeaking cultures. Classes take place three times a week for 45 minutes each in the Middle School (Grades 6 8) and twice a week in Grades 4 and 5. Younger students have one weekly lesson. The Spanish teacher works closely with the Middle School teaching team PreK Grade 5 faculty teams and administrators to create meaningful projects and field trips set homework and assessments for diverse learners and write progress reports for Middle School students as well as curriculum summaries three times a year.
Responsibilities include:
Designing and selecting Spanish language curriculum
Developing engaging lesson plans with an understanding of the individual needs of students
Leading conversational classes engaging students in games and teaching vocabulary grammar and written Spanish
Teaching students about the history culture traditions and achievements of people in the multiple regions and cultures where Spanish is spoken
Investing in the life of the school by supporting social and emotional learning participating in faculty meetings multidisciplinary team meetings faculty work week antibias training and other professional development opportunities
Collaborating with colleagues to produce interdisciplinary projects and collectively support the overall growth of students
Requirements:
Written and verbal proficiency in Spanish with a familiarity with related literature history culture and current events
Teaching experience certificate and/or degree with a strong understanding and appreciation for the unique developmental needs of elementary and middle school age students
Strong interpersonal skills as well as written and verbal communication skills with an inclination to share that with colleagues and families
Ongoing professional development as well as a comfort with conducting classes almost exclusively in Spanish while incorporating a deep focus on cultural understandings
A familiarity with the ACTFL guidelines for teaching and learning a second language as well as an understanding of supporting students whose first language is Spanish
