SUMMARY

A TCI/Assistant Supervisor will perform daily TCI tasks communications and other various tasks for Fire Department functions in the community. A TCI/Assistant Supervisor will perform the duties of a TCII/Supervisor when the TCII is absent.

Working Environment/Schedule

The Communications Division operates on a 247365day basis. Typical shifts for the division are(daylight)(daylight) and(night). The schedule rotates for the daylight shifts and remains constant for the night shift.

Schedules are not guaranteed and are subject to change at any time to meet the divisions needs based on departmental or community needs.
Employees are subject to mandatory overtime oncall or even recall in accordance with departmental and city policy and applicable state and federal laws. This mandatory overtime may be based on departmental or community needs.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

All typical tasks that are included in the Telecommunicator I (TCI) job

description.
When applicable plan direct and supervise the work of Telecommunicator I/Leads (TCI/Lead) and TCIs on duty.
Enforce city and department policies and guidelines.
Document and discuss performance or behavioral issues and concerns with subordinate TCIs.
Create and facilitate development and training opportunities for TCIs assigned to the shift.
Ensure that all incoming calls are appropriately received processed and dispatched in accordance with communications division training guidelines and established benchmarks.
When applicable serve as the shift point of contact for command staff other agencies and the media.
Facilitate city and/or department notifications when required.
Other duties as assigned.







Knowledge Skills Abilities
Considerable knowledge and operational experience in multichannel radio and multiline telephone systems.
Working knowledge of the functions practices and procedures of the Charlotte Fire Department.
Working knowledge of the physical layout and geography of the City of Charlotte and surrounding areas.
Ability to accurately receive and transmit radio communications.
Ability to assess people and situations to apply sound judgment to remain calm under high stress environments and to elicit sufficient and essential information for dispatching and assisting field personnel.
Ability to direct the work of skilled TCIs and provide constructive feedback tactfully and meaningfully.
Ability to multitask i.e. work simultaneously on different calls with different agencies and personnel.
Ability to communicate (speak and write) clearly and distinctly.

Create and maintain an environment of teamwork.
Ability to maintain accurate and complete work activity records and files.
Ability to issue reasonable and prudent orders to subordinate TCIs.
Ability to follow reasonable and prudent orders from members in supervisory positions and complete other duties as assigned.
Investigate disciplinary issues either witnessed or received from the chain of command and approve action. (Disciplinary documentation if so required).

command and approve action (Positive placed within employee file).

Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or GED
A valid drivers license
Minimum of three (3) years of experience within a Public Safety Communications Center or an equivalent combination of related supervisory

experience and Public Safety Communications Center experience.
Completion of the APCO Communications Training Officer (CTO) program within the first year if not already certified.
Completion of divisional TCI/Lead position task book within one year.
Completion of the City of Charlotte QUEST program within one year.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

The Citys Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes but is not limited to: reference checks social security verification education verification criminal conviction record check and if applicable a credit history check sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

Background checks must be in compliance with all federal and state statutes such as the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidates written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a preemployment drugscreening test and physical examination. During the selection process candidates may be asked to take a skills test and/or participate in other assessments.
