The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fishery Biologist 3 located in Juneau!


What you will be doing:
The Office of the Chief Fisheries Scientist for Salmon is seeking a motivated and technically skilled individual to join our team under the joint supervision of the program leads for the Research and Data Services (RDS) and Salmon Ocean Ecology (SOEP) programs. This position plays a critical role in advancing statewide salmon research by leading the development of data systems and analytical tools while also contributing to fieldbased scientific operations. The incumbent will design develop and maintain tools and workflows that support salmonrelated data collection and analysis. They will manage systems for storing and retrieving research data ensuring consistency accessibility and longterm usability. As part of their field responsibilities they will serve intermittently as the chief scientist for juvenile salmon ocean surveys coordinating logistics supervising crew activities and overseeing the collection and management of biological data.

The working environment you can expect:
This fulltime position will be based at the ADF&G office in Douglas Alaska. The position is primarily officebased with work performed at a computer but includes opportunities for travel to various regions for survey work. The incumbent intermittently serves as the chief scientist aboard offshore juvenile salmon surveys contributing to biological data collection and logistical coordination. This role occasionally requires work outside of regular business hours including evenings and weekends. The department offers schedule flexibility and hybrid telework options. This position may require extended periods of travel aboard a research vessel.

Who we are looking for:
The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge skills abilities and experience:
  • An ability to use contemporary statistical coding tools (e.g. R Python) with a comprehensive knowledge of reproducible scientific principles and methods (e.g. git markdown).
  • Strong written communication skills including technical writing and experience with reproducible document frameworks such as Quarto or R Markdown.
  • Experience with juvenile salmon ocean surveys including logistics coordination data collection and team supervision.
  • Proven ability to work with a high degree of independence and as part of a team and as a contributor to a positive and supportive working environment.

Minimum Qualifications

A bachelors degree from an accredited college in biology a branch of biology limnology biometrics oceanography forestry fisheries science or natural resource management;

AND

One year of full performance professional experience as a biologist or fish culturist. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2 Fish Culturist 2 Wildlife Biologist 2 Habitat Biologist 2 or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:

A bachelors degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology a branch of biology limnology biometrics oceanography forestry aquaculture aquatic ecology fisheries resources or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques human population dynamics or the design and manipulation of landscapes) of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and

at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry physics mathematics statistics geology hydrology or GIS.

Special Note:

Upper division courses means courses that are specialized indepth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problemsolving analytical thinking skills and theoretical applications with depth and rigor in a disciplines theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics microscopic analysis underwater research or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
