PURPOSE STATEMENT: The role of the School Counselor is dedicated to implementing a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program aligned with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Standards and the ASCA National Model: Define Manage Deliver and Assess. This program is designed to support all students in achieving academic success fostering personalsocial growth aiding in career decisionmaking and facilitating community contributions. The School Counselor also acts as a consultant to school staff parents and community members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully an individual must be able to perform each essential duty/functions satisfactorily. The school counselor advocates and supports the academic and personal development of all students through the ASCA components:

Define: School counselors utilize specific standards (ASCA School Counselor Professional Standards & Competencies and ASCA Student Standards: Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success) to develop implement and assess their school counseling program to improve student outcomes.

  • School Counseling Framework: Develops a comprehensive school counseling program within district goals and ASCA National Model framework for the purpose of managing and accessing student utilization and outcomes in support of academic career and personal/social goals.
  • Documentation and Progress Monitoring: Maintain accurate records and monitor student progress to identify issues and take appropriate actions to enhance success.
  • Legal and Ethical Responsibility: Adheres to laws policies procedures and ethical standards of the school counseling profession.

Manage: School counselors use program focus and planning tools to guide the design and implementation of a school counseling program that enhances student success.

  • School Data Summary: Assists teachers parents/guardians and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data.
  • System Support and Integration: Provides appropriate information to school personnel related to the comprehensive school counseling program.
  • Resources: Uses available technology and resources to enhance the school counseling program.
  • Professional Development: Participates in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.

Deliver: School Counselors use the ASCA Student Standards: Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success to deliver direct or indirect services to improve student achievement attendance and discipline.

  • Preventive and Responsive Services: Provides shortterm individual and/or group counseling to students with identified concerns and needs implements an effective referral and followup process as needed and accurately and appropriately uses assessment procedures for determining services.
  • Individual Student Planning: Assists all students individually or in groups with developing academic career and personal/social skills goals and plans. Accurately and appropriately interprets and utilizes student data. Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational career transitions between educational levels and life planning.
  • Collaboration Consultation and Information Gathering: Provide educators with current research information to aid in understanding students affective development enabling better support for students. Collaborates with a variety of internal and external stakeholders (school administrators school social workers special education teachers other educational & community resources parents/guardians etc.) for the purpose of providing information relative to school counseling program services crisis management preventative services and needs of individual students.

Assess: To achieve the best results for students school counselors regularly assess their comprehensive school counseling program.

  • Data Compilation and Analysis: Collect and analyze data (e.g. aggregated disaggregated individual etc.) from multiple sources to identify needs ensure compliance with policies and procedures and monitor program effectiveness in order to guide future direction of the counseling program.
  • Accountability: Conducts a yearly program audit to review the extent of program implementation and effectiveness. Uses data to measure results of the comprehensive school counseling program activities and shares results as appropriate with relevant stakeholders. Monitors student academic performance behavior and attendance and facilitates appropriate interventions.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintain consistent and predictable attendance to meet the requirements of the position.
  • Participate in various meetings for the purpose of receiving information or sharing information and expertise with students colleagues and parents/guardians.
  • Confer regularly with immediate supervisor
  • Follow all District policies work procedures and reasonable requests by proper authority
  • Perform other additional related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient functioning of the work unit.

EDUCATION AND RELATED WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Completion of a supervised practicum and internship in a school setting as part of the masters program.
  • Masters degree in school counseling from an accredited institution.

LICENSES REGISTRATIONS or CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Wyoming Educator License with a Professional Services Endorsement for School Counselor.

CONTINUING EDUCATION:

After obtaining licensure and certification school counselors are required to participate in continuing education to maintain their credentials. This can involve attending workshops seminars or completing additional coursework.

SKILLS KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES:

Skills: Ability to perform technical tasks update skills to meet changing job demands use appropriate assessment instruments maintain accurate records manage projects and utilize relevant software applications. Maintain integrity of confidential information relating to students staff or district patrons in accordance with district policy and administrative guidelines state and federal laws.

Communication: Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to speak effectively to large and small groups. Excellent human relations skills with the ability to establish good relationships with diverse individuals and groups.

Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of the ASCA National Model. Understanding of child development stages laws/regulations/policies community resources curriculum and instructional methods and treatment modalities and assessments.

Abilities: Capability to schedule appropriate activities collaborate with diverse groups work with data use jobrelated equipment solve problems independently communicate effectively maintain confidentiality meet deadlines prioritize tasks work in a team and handle interruptions efficiently.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT OPERATING KNOWLEDGE:

  • Operating knowledge of and experience with typical office equipment such as telephones copier etc.
  • Operating knowledge of and experience with office productivity programs such as Microsoft Office Suite Email etc.
